Storm
Yamaraashi-chan and I had a conversation yesterday evening, and one of the things we decided was that she no longer needs to be protected from the Internet by a psuedonym. She has her own Facebook account, which in true 13-year-old style is full of "OMG!"s, idle worship of idol celebrities, and the occasional shout of "Life is too confusing!", and it is under her own name.

Therefore, she would like me to stop calling her Yamaraashi-chan in print, and refer to her by her given name,

Wait, are you kidding? Yamaraashi isn't her given name? Storm ... ?! Can I be brutally honest and say that if I had a choice, I'd rather live with Yamaraashi than Storm ... lol.

Wait, are you kidding? Yamaraashi isn't her given name?

Nope. We actually both commented in our LJs quite a while ago about how we gave both our kids pseudonyms for online use until they were old enough for protection.

But you'll have to wait another two years to find out what Kouryou's given name is! ;-)

Ehh, for probably 20 years now (gosh, has it been 20, maybe 21 years, already?!) I thought "Elf" was Elf's given name. Much cooler than when I discovered indirectly what it really was.

It'll be an interesting reveal to find out what you named Kouryou ... but I'll say this, I'll be way disappointed if it's something like "Moonshadow" ... ;-)

Nope, nothing like Moonshadow. Although when her name is shortened, you'll get a laugh. I will give you this hint: it's Welsh.

I suppose next you're going to disprove the existence of Santa and the Easter Bunny...!

1. I hope it's spelled with sparkies canonically.

2. My children are (nearly) 19 and 22, and I still use pseudonyms for them. They like it that way. :-)

I kinda wish she'd kept it, too, but she's very strong-willed about using her real name these days. I think she likes it.

The sparkles are optional, but appreciated.

You could point out that one of your LJ readers and online-groupie-from-long-ago has gone by "candide" (or some variant thereof) online for the past 15+ years, to keep his personal musings personal, out of sight of prying eyes. Like prospective colleges or employers. They get directed to my more "public online persona," one which uses my name.

Not that she shouldn't be proud of such a unique and powerful name. ^_^

So, tell her I say, "By all means, use 'Storm,' anyplace you want to be publicly seen and known. But also have a pseudonym of your own that you use for places online where you want to speak freely."

(And of course, I have a third pseudonym that I use for pr0n sites, to add even more obfuscation and distance from my public online persona.)

Mine can do as they like in their own accounts, but I will be calling them Thing1 and Thing2 for the rest of their lives (they are 16 and 18). They just sigh and roll their eyes.

I wonder how much teasing she got for that name. It's pretty, but a little unusual. Though not as unusual as Tristan (my given name).

SO glad my dad was joking with mom about naming me Tiglith Pilizer. Oh, the joys of having a history geek for a dad. As it is, Tristan is Welsch, and was the name of one of the knights of the round table. My middle name, Alexander, is from Alexander the Great.

Just did a search on Facebook, out of curiosity. Even knowing her true name, Storm Sternberg, I still can't find her on there. Looks like she's still safe!

My parents were expecting (for no particularly good reason) a girl, so the name they chose for me was Valeska Connie, which arguably would have been a more difficult name to grow up with than what they eventually settled on.

I use my given name almost exclusively offline, and my nom-de-net as much as I can online. Although I have had folks call me "Blaise" in real life, it's very rare.

Partly because, if I ever have a daughter, she'll end up being either Eris or Erisel.

I know two other people who were also named "Storm" by their parents. For both of them, each in their own way, the name is utterly, utterly appropriate.

It's been my observation that the same is true of your daughter. :-)

Whoa. And here, I thought that she actually had to go through school with kids asking her why she had a Japanese name when she's not, y'know, Japanese.

But now I bet she has a good many peers who think she's really cool (or not!) for being named after an X-man. :)
