If you have a dog or cat, be aware that almost half of the pet food currently in the U.S. supply pipeline has been recalled. Go here and check and see if the brand and lot numbers you are currently feeding your cat are subject to the recall. Dinah (pictured at left) eats Nutro Natural Choice, and I was a little freaked out when I read the report. Fortunately, there are also lot numbers associated with the recall and the batch we had was not part of the recall.

Merlin and Kanji are on Purina, thank heavens, and safe.

Also, pretty cat! It's not often I get to see a black cat with copper eyes. :)

Should note that this appears to only affect soft/wet pet food.

"The recall covers the company's "cuts and gravy" style food, which consists of chunks of meat in gravy, sold in cans and small foil pouches between December 3 and March 6 throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico." --CNN

All clear for those of us feeding dry food.

Fortunately, the wet food our cat gets is Purina Fancy Feast, which isn't on the recall, and no dry foods were affected. According to a piece on NPR this afternoon, the manufacturer still isn't sure why the food is causing this reaction in pets, but noted that all of the food connected with the problems was produced using wheat gluten from a new supplier.

I know Tabitha is a bit unadventurous when it comes to choice of catfood, and when the manufacturer's tests can't find anything, and it seems to be associated with an ingredient from a new supplier, I wonder if they're running scared from the thought of a horde of lawyers associated with fussy cats.

On the other hand, cats dying of renal failure is nothing to sneeze at. And personally, I'd rather assume that there's a problem and find out that there is none, than assume that there's no problem and find out that there is a problem.

Sorry.

When I read it, the statement from the manufacturer, which Elf had linked to, just said "complaints". No mention that I recall of renal failure.

Fortunately, we feed our cats the smooshed-style wet-food (currently, Meow-Mix brand). They tend to lick away all the gravy from the cuts-in-gravy style, then not eat the meat. :rolls-eyes:

Heh. Mine are exactly the same way.

And yes, as noted, only "cuts in gravy" is affected, so the turkey and giblets mush Magic and Cally enjoy is not a concern.
