Just go read this post from [livejournal.com profile] mephron. I don't know who he is, but you have to read it.

Un-F'ing-believable.

Actually, she's kinda hot. (I believe that's the point.)

I've found that bile and LJ have replaced my need for caffeine in the mornings.

It's worse than you think

It's not her bustline that's offensive. It's that big friggin' sword.

Really. I've heard of this sort of thing happening before.

That ridiculous double-standard (the guard letting Maxim through...) reminds me of a Bizarre sketch, you know, that Monty Python's Flying Circus-esque (but more crude and not as clever) series starring John Byner in the 80s. This show was mostly memorable because it aired at 9pm on broadcast television, and it had uncensored topless nudity-- including the sketch I have in mind, where the security guard makes an attractive woman run through the metal detector, removing more and more clothing, until she has her bra removed, and surprise, it was the bra clasp setting the alarm off all along. Then he hands her all her clothes and she walks off. The next in line is a heavyset, not-so-attractive woman, bandoliers of ammunition slung over her shoulders, cradling an M-60...and the guard waves her right through.

Despite being crude and shocking, I guess it is a bit of relevant social commentary. Or at least I'm reading this book confiscation scenario as similar, it would appear that the guard coveted the book to read over his break or something, but didn't care about the more explicit and risque Maxim covers. Americans are no safer with these ridiculous searches and capricious confiscations.

Completely random comment...

I've been a Journal Entry fan since the early 90s. Out of curiosity, I just searched for both of our names, to see if anyone besides me had put them together. I found someone's old Mosaic 1.0.3 links page. (Of course, both links were dead...)

Confiscation

When I was stationed at Fort Ord I had a buddy who was one of the cadre who met incoming the incoming busses of recruits and gave the "There are XX,XXX,XX places on the human body to hide things and I know every one of them. This is your last chance to put dope, knives, porn, or anything else into the hole on the top of this footlocker with full amnesty."

We used to get the best grass, switchblades, smut, and other stuff out of that footlocker.

The guard you linked about is either (a) too cheap to buy his own porn or (b) a bible thumper in the wrong job.

That asshole who was doing the search probably wanted it for himself.

Bingo!

I'd bet dollars to donuts that he wasn't bloody well about to report confiscating a gaming book even if he'd gotten away with it.

I hear you need to carry an extra bottle of vodka sometimes, when returning from a visit to the former Soviet bloc...

On a related note. I had a very very similar experience when I tried and take my local fast ferry. (Rochester,NY--Toronto,canada). I havent updated my journal in a while so dont expect to read it there. I had a backpack with me(I was going to spend the day in toronto and had lotsa stuff). And the one piece of reading I had with me was a strategy guide for Final fantasy X-2. The cover had a picture of three sexy-ish chicks each with thier respective deadly weapons(dual-guns,dual-daggers,and a very sharp lookin sword). I got hassled very similar to Mephron to give up my book because it could be dangerous or "incite something".

I flat out told him he cant have it and if he denies me access due to a book cover Ill have the media all over this place for violating my rights as an individual to own literature. The guy acted all farenheit-451 and threatend to take it anyways but the manager showed up and kindly let me pass. I was pissed but attributed it all the craziness this security shit is causing. Maybe ill contact RGRTA (local authority) about this afterall...

My problem with this story is not that I imagine that any of the petty thieves or petty censors would be backed up by any authority - it is a veritable certainty that they would not.

My problem is that reports of such things are making people afraid to carry certain books on certain occasions. Our mindscape is being terroformed[*] by fear of people low on the chain of command.

[not a typo. a real word. At least, it's a real word now: I made it up especially for this entry]

I had to look twice at your word...

"terrorformed" might be better: either way it's a good word for what this sort of thing does.

Because of terror or FOR terror?

I wouldent say all this is being done because of the whole terror thing but more along the lines of power lust. Lackeys want power and they have been given more control than ever before over the general public. And abuse is bound to happen. And although this is not the place for general politics it WAS bush who authorized these people to have much more power than is really needed. People want more power always so they make whomever is below them fear something or the other so they trust and rely on that person.

Thi is not being done BECAUSE of terror but to proliferate terror. Thats my opinion on this, hopefully I wont be too shouted at for voicing it.
