Marketing Idea: Punishment Pyjamas
Feb. 8th, 2006 08:37 pmI think someone ought to start a company called Brussel Sprouts Pyjamas. They make high-priced, ugly pyjamas for children. Pyjamas with pictures of crying babies. Pyjamas printed with brussel sprouts and liver. Pyjamas with pictures of sludge plumbers and garbage men as drawn by Don Martin, complete with flies. Pyjamas in hideous, splotchy greens, greys and browns. They'd have be comfy as hell, but unpleasant to look at.
I keep telling Kouryou-chan that if she doesn't stay in bed, I'm gonna buy her ugly pyjamas. She's obsessed with pretty colors, and actually having a pair of such pyjamas would be good incentive. Of course, it might always backfire and we'd end up with a Goth child.

This afternoon, everyone took off from work early. We were sitting in the office when suddenly, foom! and all the power went out. There wasn't even a flicker. It was electronic death as sure as a bullet. Battery backups started screaming, and a shriek of indignation came out of the women's bathroom.
Seattle Power could not give us an ETA, and the entire subsection of the city was down. I gathered up my stuff and prepared to head out. I ran into my co-workers in the courtyard out front. "Are you taking off?" one of them asked me.
"Yeah," I said. "I'll call in once in a while. If the power comes back on, I'll come back. Meanwhile, I'm gonna go have lunch and see if I can find the new Iron Maiden CD."
"Whew," one of them said. "For a second there, I thought you were going to find a new iron maiden."
I said, "Why would I want two of them?"
Thank you. I'll be here all week. Tip your waitress. Try the canapes.

Feb. 8th, 2006 10:09 pmWhenever I see Charlie Stross churning out copy, it seems part of my brain is convinced I have to keep up with him. The Temple grew to 16,541 words today over the 13,694 it had yesterday. That's pretty damned good progress.
It's too bad I'll have to rewrite significant parts of it. As is typical for a first draft, a character's motivation did not become clear until far after the opening, and I have some characterization weaknesses (no! you don't say!). But it's mucho progress, and I feel good about it.
