Is it possible to feel both hot and cold at the same time in bed? Last night I had the worst time sleeping. Over the weekend, I bought a mattress pad, something I haven't used in years, and put the flannels over the mattress, and all night long I was tossing and turning, feeling too warm against the bed and too cold under the covers.

It's been happening a lot recently and I'm not sure why. There's not that much stress in my life at the moment. Just the general work - life thing.

Menopause? ;)

Y'know, I have a lot of sympathy for women, and enjoy doing gender tweaks from time to time; my affection for pink, for example, even if it doesn't flatter me. I sometimes wish I did not have the excessively strong male jaw and all that and could play dress-up effectively. (There's a beautiful young man who wears dresses to the club from time to time; I envy his ease in that.)

But menopause is not one of those things I think I have sympathy with. Or would ever want to experience.

You're a tad young for it

However, my husband (who is going to turn 51 this year), has had a similar experience periodically. He's sure that it's male menopause. The identical thing happens to me EVERY SINGLE NIGHT. However, I'm 55, and female, and officially menopausal. I get a cold spell every night at bed-time, put on some sort of PJs and covers to deal with it, and end up pretty much stripped throughout the night, then get cold again and crawl back under the covers. It doesn't make for very restful sleep. [livejournal.com profile] moosl says that he's felt me giving off significant amounts of heat.

When I slept alone more often, I put a twin-sized electric mattress pad across the foot of my king-sized bed. Most of the time it was just the right additional heat, but if I got too cold or too warm I could move up or down to be more on/off it.

Fwiw, flannel sheets always make me feel over-warm, pretty much as you describe there.

It's been coooooold here, so every now and then I take a hot water bottle to bed. That's been too warm (and irritates both the kitties and the other person in the bed). At the same time - that does have a certain hormonal tinge.
