For groans: Police says the girl was lured into a long-term sexual relationship with the couple through the Wicca religion and ceremonial witchcraft and drugs.

And for fun: Y'know the old expression that some politicians will only lose their election if they are ever caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy? County Auditor Roger Fisher is testing the second part of that proposition.

Every now and then someone gets caught. A mutual friend of ours did three months in the Spokane County Jail when she and her husband got caught doing their 14 year old baby sitter.(ca 1964) I don't think they became Wiccan until later.

I was to chicken to get it on with our babysitter until she turned 18. My daughter had a 28 year old boyfriend when she was 17. He was a sweet guy, and it didn't occur to me until years later that I could have had him tossed in the clink.

Sad to hear those folks got caught, but they may not have been total good guys either. We'll probably never know.

Y'know, it kinda doesn't matter if they were "good guys" or not. We can't point at this and claim it as an act of civil disobedience: right now the law is pretty damn intolerant of (a) banging a minor and (b) giving her drugs. (I also kinda wonder where the heck her parents are hanging out; they seem to be pointing the finger at MySpace. Whatever.)

If you disagree with the law, work to change it. But if you're breaking the law, you're not working to change it, you're just breaking it, and there are penalties to pay if you get caught.

As one might expect in a highly dysfunctional society like ours, there is a huge gap between what the laws say we should do and what we actually do. Joani Blank, who has made a small effort to research the extent and consequences of teen age/older person sex, says that it is more wide spread and far less harmful than most people think. Plenty of cultures around the world consider sex between teens and adults normal and appropriate.

As far as the drugs go, my experience is that teens use relationships with adults to get drugs more than adults use drugs to seduce teens.

Breaking the law, preferably, but not always, in a conscious way, has been a major way social change has been effected in this country. Stonewall, Rosa Parks, the Boston Tea Party, and my personal favorite, since it decriminalized Ming and I, Loving v Virginia.
