For groans: Police says the girl was lured into a long-term sexual relationship with the couple through the Wicca religion and ceremonial witchcraft and drugs.
And for fun: Y'know the old expression that some politicians will only lose their election if they are ever caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy? County Auditor Roger Fisher is testing the second part of that proposition.

Your bias is showing...
Date: 2007-07-16 05:12 am (UTC)Oh, gods, I can just see it coming. I went and took a look at a bunch of different sites covering this, and in many of them, one of the police sergeants on the case gave me the distinct impression of religious bias.
"She was lured into this couple's grasp through the Wicca religion...", said Police Sgt Dan Ast.
Yeah, I'm gonna believe everything you say about this case, dude.
Did these people actually do what they are accused of doing? I don't know. But when you have folks like Ast showing an obvious bias like this, I have no way of knowing how much of the "evidence" is real, and how much has been doctored. I am immediately on the defensive, and immediately skeptical of the police's side.
Good going, idiot.
Come to the dark side! We have (insert what ever here...)
Date: 2007-07-16 05:39 am (UTC)I wish that the focus would be on the fact that an adult abused a child and that this can happen with anything! (remember the Catholic Church sex scandals) I agree that this is going to be used to slam anyone who might possibly be considered non-main stream, even those christians who are not right wing evangelicals...
..sad, very sad.
As a christian myself I would like to apologize for what is going to happen next by a group who claim to be vaguely associated with my religious choice.

Date: 2007-07-16 07:02 am (UTC)I was to chicken to get it on with our babysitter until she turned 18. My daughter had a 28 year old boyfriend when she was 17. He was a sweet guy, and it didn't occur to me until years later that I could have had him tossed in the clink.
Sad to hear those folks got caught, but they may not have been total good guys either. We'll probably never know.

Date: 2007-07-16 04:32 pm (UTC)Secondly, some proportion of all love affairs will be in violation of age-of-consent laws. This is because we set the age of consent years past the actual onset of sexual activity, and because younger women usually go for older men. This, also, has been known to happen in various Christian congregations.
The adulterous bisexuality would be against Christian morals, but then I'm sure it happens from time to time, anyway. Unfortunately, I agree with you that -- because Wicca is an unpopular religion -- it will be the religion rather than the individual which will be blamed in this specific case.
I'll also add that the prosecution in this case has hardly helped the girl, or the two children of that couple.

Re: Sigh...
Date: 2007-07-16 09:07 pm (UTC)If you disagree with the law, work to change it. But if you're breaking the law, you're not working to change it, you're just breaking it, and there are penalties to pay if you get caught.

Date: 2007-07-17 01:14 pm (UTC)As far as the drugs go, my experience is that teens use relationships with adults to get drugs more than adults use drugs to seduce teens.
Breaking the law, preferably, but not always, in a conscious way, has been a major way social change has been effected in this country. Stonewall, Rosa Parks, the Boston Tea Party, and my personal favorite, since it decriminalized Ming and I, Loving v Virginia.
