I had another one of those "I'm getting old" moments. I was hanging out on my favorite anime forum when someone asked, "Hey, is the cover art to the Hidamari Sketch soundtrack a Beetles [sic] reference?"

Geez, what are they teaching kids these days? Not only is it a riff on Abbey Road, but Miyako is barefoot just like Paul. (I notice that another important piece of the cover, that the characters were all in step except for Paul, is not reproduced, perhaps in an attempt to keep down any rumors that they're planning on killing off Miyako.) There's both a Volkswagon Beetle and a ranty old man in the background.

I am reminded of the time back in 1988 as I was driving my university roommate's ditzy girlfriend back to campus. A song came on the radio and she asked, "Hey, is that the new Whitesnake single?"

The song was Stairway to Heaven.
Last night, Colbert was commenting on the UK's decision to no longer use the phrase "Global War on Terror," preferring instead such terms as "Ongoing military operations," and indicating that the UK would be using more "diplomatic options" and "soft power" in the future. Colbert scoffed, "Soft power? Soft power is what you do with a consenting adult until he or she uses a safeword!"

It's rare I literally roll on the floor laughing but I had been sitting on the floor already.

Colbert Report and The Daily Show

You watch that trash? With your busy schedule?

I used to enjoy the satire, but found myself increasingly annoyed about how much the shows were about the hosts' self-centered, egtocentric personalities.

For me, this negated their opinions/satire. Now I want to puke when they divert from satire to parading in front of the 'audience' dancing around, arms raiseed in praise of themselves.

Barf.

I use the website's "Motherload" feature and listen to it when I'm cooking dinner. It's a healthy reprieve from NPR.

Um... the two shows are really pretty different in theme... and to my mind, Stephen Colbert on the Daily Show was a rather different character than Stephen Colbert on The Colbert Report. I mean, sure, Colbert does exactly that dancing around thing, but has had that going on since day 1 of his own show, so I don't see how that's really a new thing. (For anyone not aware, he does that crowd-hogging dance on the way across the set to guest interviews. The gag is that he's grabbing the applause the audience is giving the guest for himself, and is playing on the egomania of people like Bill O'Reilly.)

I had my own 'getting old' moment when from one year to the next the average age of attendees went from highschool & college age to under 12 (it seemed) just like that.

I'd have been a lot more self-conscious if I hadn't spent all of Saturday wearing a Giant Fightin' Robot outfit. However after that point if a show hadn't been on Cartoon Network or could be bought down at Suncoast on DVD, it wasn't what the majrity were talking about, or even cosplaying for that matter.

Part of the reason I GAFIAte'd from anime fandom...

Last summer in the car, Here Comes The Sun started to play.

The 30-year-old next to me asked, "Gee, is that Paul McCartney?"

I couldn't help it. I laughed.

I had a similar Beatles-related, 'old-age-closing-in' moment about 30 years ago: I was working in a record store in an Atlanta suburb, biored out of my mind, and hovering within earshot of our only customers at that moment, a pair of bored teen-aged girls.

As one flipped idly through the Beatles albums, she observed to her companion: "look, Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings...."

I was seized by a sudden impulse to turn on Lawrence Welk & shoot myself up with an overdose of Geritol; it was the first time I ever felt *OLD*...and I wasn't even 25 yet....

(I told my honey about this (in short-form) and she cried "HA! Urban legend, never happened!" Oh, if only it hadn't....)

When asked where I was when Kennedy was shot, I'm usually kind enough to say "I wasn't born yet. But I was alive for first-run Star Trek". But I always remember the line from When Harry Met Sally: "Ted Kennedy was SHOT?!?!?"

I have a compilation CD with 80's music and Axel-F comes on. My 5 yo in the backseat perks up and says, "Mom, turn it up, it's Crazy Frog!" ala http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XkHm8uUuT0o

No no no no! Please, NO. I'm not that old!

And every time Immigrant's Song comes on the radio, my kids shout "Hey, it's Viking Kittens! (http://users.wolfcrews.com/toys/vikings/)"

I will have to say that the same 5 yo will walk down the hallway of the daycare singing "Nun nun naaaa, nun nun na naaaa" to the tune of Smoke on the Water AND she knows the name of the song. I'm so proud! :) Earned her a free Italian soda at an event this past weekend for being so entertaining. :) I taught her well.

Yeah, I've exposed them to Smoke on the Water, and told them that it's a true story. They think it's cool that people write rock songs about things that really happened.

What was the date that lovely line was aired on? Was it the Colbert report, or that transition from the Daily show?

Gotta start somewhere, i suppose.

You're not old. You're... ummmm... slightly younger than I am! I do know exactly where I was when JFK was shot... in the hospital, 2 days old.

Even my daughter (16 today!) would have known it was a Beatles album. (I still have to show it to her.) Although, she'd more likely look at the artwork and give a critique. She's practicing her manga-style drawing. Well, when she's not online reading current events stories that are too depressing for even me.

The concept of a safe word is foreign to my wife, only because she's too vanilla to even go there. But, damn, that line is funny.

Actually... um...

...from looking back-and-forth between the Abbey Road cover and that Kidamari Sketch OST cover, Paul/Miyako both are 'out of step' with the others.

All the others on the OST are right-arm-forward enough to generally guarantee they are right-foot-back, but Miyako's bare feet show the ball of her left foot on the rear foot, so she's right-foot-forward.

Queue the rumor mill afterall!

True. I hadn't looked at it well enough before showing my daughter (who immediately asked, "Isn't that _Abbey Road_?"). There's also a very small part where the legs come together that shows Miyako has her right leg forward.

But none of them looks like a walrus. ;-)
