Richard Scoble, who apparently is some marketing bigwig within Microsoft, claims that this video (Macromedia Flash), entitled "What if Microsoft designed the packaging for the iPod?" was done by Microsoft internally.

It's still bitingly true. Omaha must see this.

Robert Scoble, actually. I don't think he's a bigwig as such, just a very visible face for the company.

Which if it is true, I could see as his statement (parodical) that Microsoft's marketing is too busy and tries to shove too much data into it's "box presence".

Anecdotally, I know plenty of people here who cringe when marketing comes to town on their product.

Nobody who actually built Desktop Search wanted it to be named MSN Search Toolbar with Windows Desktop Search (http://toolbar.msn.com/). And yet, somehow, that's what it's called. I absolutely believe that video was created by disgruntled engineers, bitter about what Marketing did to ensure that nobody will ever look at what they built and go "Hey! Cool!"

(Also, for what it's worth, Scoble is a "technical evangelist." He's not a particularly high-level guy - his job is exposing the human side of the megacorp to the world. This puts him in a good position to visibly carp on many of MS's flaws, which has earned him lots of accolades and lots of hate, often from the same people.)

I think you just called Robert Scoble a Dick.

(Ohh, I couldn't resist!)
