Dubious parental decisions

On the way home this evening, as I was crossing the street from the supermarket to my subdivision, I passed by a woman and her two children, both girls, one about Yamaarashi-chan's age, the other maybe a year and a half younger. The mother had apparently required these children, if they were going to go out in the cold and the dark, to wear those blinky warning LED things bicyclists wear on their heads. Each wore a headband with a blue/white blinky in the front and a bright red blinky in the back.

While I can understand the urge, the implementation left much to be desired.

There seems to be something unwholesome about that. I'm not sure I'd put a strobe LED on my kids at all -- seems like it'd mess with their eyes or give them the epilepsy or something.

I've taken to wearing one on my coat and/or backpack on dark foggy winter mornings. The cars certainly don't give a rip about pedestrians any other time of the year, so when the fog is thick enough you can't see down the street when you're walking, and it's 5:30 in the morning, those blinkies are a pretty good deal. And the bus system here used to give them away to make sure riders were seen at the stops by drivers (some of the stops aren't very well lit, never mind fog or rain).

But I'd never make anyone wear one on their head, and probably not at all on a clear night. Well, there's one person I might make do it, but that's neither here nor there just now.
