For a variety of reasons, I'm going to take parts of my LJ friends-only. Posts that I normally mark as "life" or "family" will now be available only to people on my friends' list. And that includes my love life. Who I'm sleeping with is not my kids' business, and Yamaarashi-chan, at least, can read my LJ. And more importantly, as I've gotten older I've learned the need for at least a little privacy.

There will still be a lot of traffic on my LJ. After all, writing, programming, movies, wine, food and the rest aren't aspects of my family life and I'll be willing to post those as often as usual.

But if you want to read my LJ for the more domestic elements, I recommend you ask to be friended, and I will welcome you into my LJ.

What the others said!
Though obviously it's fully up to you, you don't know me much at all, and I understand the need for privacy.

Just a note though, I also have children with LJ's, but sometimes I post things friends only, but want ny children to see it (as they have friended me, and I them), so I actually have several friends groups, one of which is "not kids", so all my friends except my children are included in that one.

I also have other freinds groups such as "really close friends", y'know, the ones I can trust to discuss intimate details of current, um, 'affairs' when those are sensitive and shouldn't be known about by everyone on my friends list.

I even have some friends groups which contain a single person, where we can discuss things of a very intimate nature :). If LJ's privacy ever fails I could get into some trouble, but it turns out that for some people I know this is more secure than email because they share a computer or email account with their partner or parent and want to discuss things that they don't want the other to know about.

The one thing I haven't figured out is, if I friend someone so they see my stuff, then I also see all theirs on my friends page. Do you know if it's possible to filter this?

The only idea I've come up with is two separate LJs, but not having a decade as a web icon, my list stays reasonably manageable. ;)

Yes, it is.

Create a custom friends group containg the friends you want to read, and then find the id of that friends group and the go to the URL :

http://www.livejournal.com/users/your_lj_name/friends?filter=group_id

and you will see only the posts from the friends in that group.
Or if you;re not feeling technically competent, login tou LJ and go to http://www.livejournal.com/friends/filter.bml.
