Went to see Wreck-It Ralph this weekend with Kouryou-chan and Omaha. It's a Pixar-perfect film. Ignore the Disney imprimatur and look at the credits: John Lasseter produced it, and he's the brilliant conscience behind Pixar, and it shows in every frame of this movie.

As a writer, I am deeply envious of whoever invented the name "Vanellope." She a character from a racing game for girls; whoever combined "Vanilla," "Velocity," and "Princess" [yes, that's a spoiler] in one elegant name deserves a freakin' medal.

There's a Pixar short at the beginning that's just as sweet and surprisingly adult (no, not that way, mind out of the gutter you troll!) called "Paperman."

They pretty much nail the arcade nostalgia pretty hard. It's not as good as Toy Story; it doesn't deal with the whole hypermicrocosm issue of manufactoria sentience, and there are one or two plot holes to drive a truck through. But if vulnerable to video game nostalgia, just bring tissues. As one acquaintance put it, "That wasn't fair. I was going to see a movie about old video games. I didn't expect them to make me cry, too."
