After a dinner of ravioli and home-made pasta sauce with lots and lots and lots of basil, garlic and real Parmesean, Kouryou-chan and I went out and picked blackberries. We got about a pint's worth, which we brought home. Most of them are in the freezer, single-layer on a sheet of wax paper, which I'm going to put into a bag once they're frozen solid. We'll collect more as the days go on, since the next two weeks are going to be harvest time. The ones with the best sun and water are ripening right now, however, and there's no time to lose.

I said "most." When we got home, I took some ice cream out of the 'fridge and left it on the counter to soften for a moment. I steamed two home-made waffles that were in the freezer, then toasted then back to some crispness. I cut them in half, slathered one half with two tablespoons of ice cream and a tablespoon of blackberries, then smushed them down with the other half.

It really doesn't get much better than that.

When they've been in the freezer over a week, the best way to get them back to a useable state is to put them onto a microwave-safe plate with a damp paper towel and heat for about twenty seconds. That steams them well enough to get a loose, kinda floppy pastry. Then I toast them so that the outside is crisp and the inside is, well, if not fluffy at least not a rock. Not that the kids even notice.
