After a dinner of ravioli and home-made pasta sauce with lots and lots and lots of basil, garlic and real Parmesean, Kouryou-chan and I went out and picked blackberries. We got about a pint's worth, which we brought home. Most of them are in the freezer, single-layer on a sheet of wax paper, which I'm going to put into a bag once they're frozen solid. We'll collect more as the days go on, since the next two weeks are going to be harvest time. The ones with the best sun and water are ripening right now, however, and there's no time to lose.

I said "most." When we got home, I took some ice cream out of the 'fridge and left it on the counter to soften for a moment. I steamed two home-made waffles that were in the freezer, then toasted then back to some crispness. I cut them in half, slathered one half with two tablespoons of ice cream and a tablespoon of blackberries, then smushed them down with the other half.

It really doesn't get much better than that.

It does, but not much. Just use more filling. :)

Yummers.

Most likely, freeze them and use them throughout the year in smoothies and shakes, with the ocassional pie or cobbler for good measure.

Steamed... this is the way to get'em thawed without over-crisping?

When they've been in the freezer over a week, the best way to get them back to a useable state is to put them onto a microwave-safe plate with a damp paper towel and heat for about twenty seconds. That steams them well enough to get a loose, kinda floppy pastry. Then I toast them so that the outside is crisp and the inside is, well, if not fluffy at least not a rock. Not that the kids even notice.

Actually it does get better, like, if the blackberries are delivered by a hot babe, and instead of a frozen waffle you make a fresh piecrust, and the hot babe sits in your lap while the pie is baking....

(Why, yes, this did happen last night, why do you ask?)

Once the blackberries are ripe here, almost every summer weekend (and especially if we have houseguests), [livejournal.com profile] charlesks makes blackberry pancakes.

He'll be in the house, mixing up the pancake batter, while I'm out gathering the blackberries. As soon as I come back with the blackberries (carefully selected so they are at their peak), they get popped into the pancakes: he pours batter into the skillet and puts the whole blackberries in.

It *really* doesn't get any better than that, unless they're topped with jsut a little bit of fresh, hot blackberry-chocolate jam.
