While I was waiting for Yamaarashi-chan to go through the whole procedure I was politely asked by the nurses if I would watch a video called "Your Child's Day In Surgery." At one point the voiceover said, "Some parents show their fear, but many try to hide it and put on a brave face, but everyone feels it."

I didn't.

When it comes to big things like surgery, I'm scared before I make the decision. Even when I know I've done everything in my power to make sure I've made the right decision, the moment of making it is always a frightening one, a portentious one. But once it's made, it's made. I did everything I could, and alia iacta est, the die is cast. It's time to move forward and accept the responsibility for the decision. I developed an understanding the possible alternative outcomes and knew the appropriate reactions.

I can understand hope and anticipation, but why fear? You've made your decision-- don't you have something better to do with your time... and your blood pressure?

"Die" is "alea" ("alia"="others"). I was at a WotC store recently (since they're closing them, stuff was way on sale), and someone knocked over one of those big containers of multisided, multicolored dice and they went all over the floor. I said, "Aleae jactae sunt", but no one there appreciated it.

I agree completely.

I've never known anyone else to feel that way.
