Does anyone see the difference I see here? In an article on how Roger Ailes is managing the blow-up of Beck, the paltryness of his hand-picked candidates for president, and greying of the Fox News audience, I saw this quote:
"For a while, if you pointed a camera at the news, Fox's ratings went up," a person close to Ailes explained. "There was the Florida recount, Bush v. Gore, 9/11, the 2004 election—until Katrina. Then the audience was kind of like, 'This is bad for the home team.'"
Note the difference there. Everything in the first list either demanded a military response or was a manufactroversy (although Bush v. Gore was a manufactroversy with debilitating consequences); Katrina is a nasty intrusion of callous reality into the daily lives of human beings. There was no one to attack. There was only humanitarian need.

This is a diamond illustration of the right-wing ideology. Humanitarian needs are irrelevant to the New American Century. Without someone to attack, the toolset of the right-wing mind is left without anything to grasp.

Notice that nobody's complained about FEMA under Obama? Apparently, it's been an effective, fast-moving, responsive agency in the hands of people who believe that government has role to play in the management of a nation.

This is unfortunate for Obama. As a friend of mine is fond of saying, "When you've done your job well, people think you've done nothing at all."

Not just humanitarian - any human need is irrelevant in the fend-for-yourself-or-die world of the neocons, with their New American Century that is set to eliminate all humans that can't pay their own way.

Aside: I am never so grateful for my dictionary than when I respond to your posts.

Come to Iowa, where many are still fighting to get the money FEMA promised for recovery from the floods of 2008. Money that FEMA has since 're-evaluated' the need for.

I'd also add, the governmental reaction to the Deepwater Horizon disaster will be a topic of discussion in the upcoming election. No one covered themselves in glory on that one, including FEMA.

I suppose it says something about me and my memory that I read the title of your post, and before I even noticed the actual content of the article, I started sniggering as I connected it with the posting you'd made in alt.sex years ago with all of the humorous double-entendres from the instructions for the Reality female condom...

"Do not tear Reality."
"You may notice that Reality moves around during sex."
"Some women have reported problems using Reality."
