Pain doesn't tell you when you ought to stop. Pain is the little voice in your head that tries to hold you back because it knows if you continue, you will change. Don't let it stop you from being who you can be. Exhaustion tells you when you ought to stop. You only reach your limit when you can go no further.

Often good advice, but sometimes pain really is telling you to stop. I know there've been a few times in my life when if I didn't listen to my body and stop, I'd have injured myself. Usually, though... he's right.

Oh, and that's just considering physical pain, which is probably the least common sort.

Probably, like Alice, he failed to heed his own good advice ...

Searching around, he had some more recent entries here, last one in June:

but his main website appears to be gone or expired.

I guess that all depends on what kind of pain we're talking about here. If we're talking a sprained or fractured ankle, pain tells you it's time to go home, not to keep going.

And there is no such thing as "I can play through it coach!" when it comes to head injuries.

I am too sensitive to politics right now. I was trying to figure out what you meant by "Palin doesn't tell you when you ought to stop."

It wasn't political. I was reading source code, trying to wrap my head around an interesting lexer/parser technique I had found in it. I was just on the verge of getting it and complained to someone that it was fun but it was also giving me a headache. "If it hurts, you should stop," she suggested. I had to look up the quote to make the appropriate reply.

Oh, and I've mostly given up on politics. It's too depressing. Whether the statists or the corporatists win, we all lose.

But you did remind me of this (http://www.google.com/search?q=Nailin'+Palin). (Google search SFW; following any of the links, not so much.)
