Sick of it all already...

I am officially sick of the non-stop touchy-feely "Why are you going to the inauguration?" love-fest on NPR. Thank the Gods for RSS; if it weren't for having a diverse newsfeed, I'd think the only things going on in the world were the shelling in Gaza and the crowning as the Prince of Peace inauguration as President for Barack Obama.

Date: 2009-01-18 02:57 pm (UTC)It's Jane Galt's law: "The devotees of the party in power are smug and arrogant. The devotees of the party out of power are insane." Haven't seen much indication that this most recent switch is any different.

Oh, and the U.S. gov't attempting to send armaments to the Israeli side by boat (with European countries refusing passage through their ports) and various attempts to get supplies to Gaza halted by the Israeli navy. There are accusations of massacre and hundred of affected civilians (who are not becoming refugees because they're walled in; see blockade, above).
All in all, that's pretty big news, and there have been some new developments in the course of it which justify a great deal of reporting.
I don't understand the fascination with every last detail of the inauguration. Other than the fact of having him sworn in, the rest seems quite dull. What he'll do and how he'll do it - THAT will be interesting.

Date: 2009-01-18 06:47 pm (UTC)OTOH, Elf, you're on the other coast, so you do not have the benefit of hearing Alan Shartock of Northeast Public Radio (WAMC) spill the dirt about NPR. As Mr. Shartock puts it, "NPR is the tail wagging the dog." The organization, NPR, was formed to serve the public radio stations around the country, to do things at a national and international level that no single station could afford alone by pooling resources. Alan Shartock reminds us of this every fund drive, then goes on to point out how NPR now dictates to the individual public radio stations, to get them to tow the party line. And the party line is, "Don't upset the ones who give us money."
This is why, for the past 8 years, NPR has carefully placated those in power … while Northeast Public Radio has told NPR to go shove it.
So now, there's a changing of the guards in D.C., and NPR, always one to chase after the money, is placating the new people in power.
I'm curious to know what news sources in other countries think of the inauguration, or if this all ceased being news as soon as the election was over…
