This past March, following the advice of my optometrist, I bought "unscratchable" glass lenses instead of the more commonplace plastic. I don't mind the weight; my prescription isn't that strong and the bliss of having lenses that actually last two years overrides any inconveniences.

While Omaha and I were out mountain biking this past month, I dropped my glasses. As you can guess since I'm writing this article, they're scratched. Directly over the ocular point on the left eye. So much for "unscratchable." Dammit.

Ah, this is where you may want to re-read the fine print. I'm sure it says something about "except for physical damage."

:-)

They're unscratchable through normal, every-day wear. Once they come off your face, all bets are off, I bet.

One of the downsides to the "unscratchable" lenses is that if you use a cleaner on your glasses, like I do daily, after a year or so it starts wearing away the antiscratch coating on the lenses & you end up with white "fog circles" that make the lenses harder and harder to see through. That's the main reason I didn't go for unscratchable this time around, but YMMV.

That coating issue should also be covered under the warranty -- antiscratch should be part of the lens and anti-reflective coatings may be able to be stripped and recoated -- if not, they should replace them.

they should replace the lens, no questions asked -- /and/ restart the two year warranty. That's been the policy of every place I've worked that also dispensed glasses (some surgical practices don't). Seriously, take them back. If they don't make good, let me know (privately, if you wish) where they came from. There are, in fact only a few manufacturing labs around here and everyone uses one or sends to someplace like Texas. The LABS here back the work. It's how they keep optoms from sending off to Texas.

I order mine from these guys ... takes about 9 days to arrive, but cheap enough to get four or five pairs a year. Amazingly good quality, on par with the megachains that sell glasses.
