Mike Huckabee announced yesterday that he would seek to amend the Constitution to God's standards.
I have opponents in this race who do not want to change the Constitution. But I believe it's a lot easier to change the Constitution than it would be to change the word of the living God. And that's what we need to do is amend the Constitution so it's in God's standards rather than trying to change God's standards so it lines up with some contemporary view of how we treat each other and how we treat the family.

Wow. How can he take the oath to become President without being forsworn? Or does his oath to a higher power take precedence?

It is not forswearing ones oath to execute his constitutional duties to attempt to change the constitution. If he succeeds, he just has to follow the new rules (more to his liking) as laid out in the amended Constitution. There is nothing wrong with running on a platform to amend the Constitution -- heck, lots of folks did back in 1788.

Of course, as President, he would have no formal role in the Amendment process, which might make it more difficult for him to change the Constitution.

This surprises anyone? He already stated that his campaign is divinely inspired:
HUCKABEE: There's only one explanation for it, and it's not a human one. It's the same power that helped a little boy with two fish and five loaves feed a crowd of five thousand people. (Applause) That's the only way that our campaign can be doing what it's doing. And I'm not being facetious nor am I trying to be trite. There literally are thousands of people across this country who are praying that a little will become much, and it has. And it defies all explanation, it has confounded the pundits. And I'm enjoying every minute of them trying to figure it out, and until they look at it, from a, just experience beyond human, they'll never figure it out. And it's probably just as well. That's honestly why it's happening.

Did Huckabee just Howard Dean himself?

I sure hope so.

So, while he's now out of the running, he gets to be the lightening rod for any negative stuff.

Either that or we end up with this. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%22If_This_Goes_On%E2%80%94%22)

Are they having a contest to see who can be the scariest candidate? Even with this nonsense, I'm still having a hard time deciding who would be worst.

I don't envy Americans at all in having to decide.
My head just hurts thinking about it.

Run, Huckabee, run! *glee* What I want from the Republicans is a candidate who looks like a total nutjob to all those middle-of-road, fiscal conservative types. I want a Republican candidate that makes the vast middle of the political spectrum think, "I'm voting anything but that guy." McCain, *he* scares me, because he's electible. Huckabee? Oh, I want him to get the nomination, and take that as a mandate to tell us all about his plans to replace the constitution with the decalogue, and return women to the kitchen.

A Christian Reconstructionist.
Bloody hell.

It was only a matter of time. And he's the most palatable of the bunch to Middle America. Where i come from, he'd get elected just for that statement. Where I am now, he's very popular, mainly because he believed in the stuff about helping the poor, too, and increased social services in the poorest parts of the country.

Wait a minute, I thought that the Constitution was supposed to have been written by a bunch of Good Christians.[*] Were they wrong? Has God's Word changed? How can this be???!?!?

[*] yes, I know that's a bunch of revisionist drivel, but it's the revisionist drivel trotted out to prove that this country is a Christian country, so the separation of Church and state only means that the state can't tell you whether to be Papist or Reformed. Internal inconsistancies. We got 'em.

But of course he's going to be inherently hypocritical, in that he's going to pick and choose which of "God's standards" he wants to enshrine in the Constitution. I would love to see the kind of chaos that Deuteronomy would cause if applied as law, for example...

IMHO, this just demonstrates how broken the American voting system is. It's basically prone to vicious swings in ideology as each party votes in ever more extremist loonies to counteract the excesses of the last extremist loony that held power.

Ugh.
