"Corporal? Your agonizer, please."
Jan. 7th, 2008 02:03 pm Remember the Star Trek episode Mirror, Mirror? You know, the one where Spock had a beard and everyone carried an agonizer?
We live in that universe now. Taser, inc. now sells a combo taser holster and ipod holder. Taser has also begun marketing to women, with tasers selling in "fashion red" and "hot pink" to appeal to that market segment.

Date: 2008-01-08 07:37 am (UTC)Tasers are the 21st century equivalent of "Reach out and don't touch someone who's trying to hurt you, but knock them flat." Useful at times. More like a phaser set to low power stun.
Yes, pink does sell much more briskly than the other colors.

Date: 2008-01-08 01:06 pm (UTC)I like the (mostly) non-lethal-but-with-stopping-power aspects of both, but I hope the fad doesn't swing too far into the "hey, it won't hurt him much, so its OK to tase this guy who's I think is looking at me funny." I worry that a "taser party" might be making light of something that should be taken seriously. If one tases (or pepper-sprays) someone before the legal definition of self-defense kicks in (i.e. disproportionate to the situation) it should still be assault, same as if a fist or karate-chop were used.

Date: 2008-01-09 07:20 am (UTC)You may appreciate the fact that many state legislatures agree with you. In California the use of a Taser or stun gun for any other reason than self defense is a FELONY under the law, much more serious than mere fisticuffs.

The reference is to Tupperware parties, a well known marketing tool intended to reach out to women. The argument is that women have to live with the increased danger of being a victim every day, and Taser might even the odds without invoking, "God made men and women, Smith & Wesson made them equal."

Date: 2008-01-09 07:25 am (UTC)I've seen lots of Taser videos including some of people on PCP and others experiencing excited delirium. During the activation period, assuming good dart contacts, the subject has little voluntary muscle control, immediately falls down, and certainly cannot get up. The PCP / ED suspects were recognizable by the fact that they would immediately get up and keep fighting immediately after the Taser ride ended, as opposed to most people who are shaky and need to catch their breath (and/or scream a bit).
The closest I've ever seen to a successful Taser resist (a video that Taser uses in training) was a martial arts instructor and Marine Corps veteran with high pain tolerance and enormous will. He took a little less than half a step before falling over.
