Well, the laptop is slowly shaping up. I have full video and audio (yay!), my favorite text processor and a few other useful utilities that I enjoy using, and most of the things I need for day-to-day operations, like Firefox, Thunderbird, Liferea, GAIM, and so forth.

On a whim, I also installed the BioAPI. I no longer need to give this machine my password. I just put my finger down on the fingerprint reader and it unlocks for me. I haven't quite got that working with unlocking the screensaver, but it works for logging into the machine after bootup, and for gaining root (administrator) access.

I've been considering doing that myself, on my own thinkpad. Which packages did you use? (Or which tarball, if you compiled from source?)

So now we just have to steal your finger with your laptop. So much easier than having to crack the password! :)

You try stealing a finger without obscuring the fingerprint with blood and mess :P

You really can access the world with a touch of your finger. ;)

Journal Entries Question

On a completely unrelated note:

What are the AI's in the Pendor universe? The ones that I can think of are:

Halloran: Ken's work AI
Dave: Ken's home AI
Lexander: The AI at Jofuran Shigokai's place
Sean: The AI at the hotel Nikolai was staying at (The Grand Dragon Hotel)
Lancelot: On board one of the ships, I think?
Wendy: One of the AI's at Rhysh.

I can't for the life of me remember the others, and I really don't want to have to read through the entire Journal Entries to find them (I get distracted when I do that. :) ).

The reason I'm asking is that I name all my computers after AI's, and I'm probably going to give the old computer a new name when I reformat it (since it's going to be for a new purpose).

Currently I have Halloran (my old, old computer, a P1.5), Dave (my old computer, the one going to be renamed and repurposed), Vision (the new computer, name from Undocumented Features), Lancelot (my work machine) and Lexander (my laptop).

I think I might have to start adding to your wiki. :)

I know Lynn and Rowan, though I think both are now substantiated as androids so I dunno if they count any longer.

Joshua & Athena - AIs from Embassy Tales (Athena was the Earth-side AI and Joshua the ship's AI)

Fawn - Though I don't know for absolute certainty it was every laid out exactly *what* Fawn was.

Wendy was an AI on the Eldarfaroth (though she may have transferred to Rhysh later)

Just a couple I could remember the stories for real quick.

Lynn was the first AI at Rhysh (0127/038 - Raising Castles) and Rowan took over after Lynn got herself a body (0519/245 - Lynn's Birthday). At some point later I believe Rowan was replaced by Pam (in 527/257 Convers[at]ions it was start, by 0528/098 - Distracting Aaden Rowan was still getting used to her new body and in 0544/118 - Affirmation by Experience the AI is called Pamela/Pam).

Liffip was the AI on board the Pellaeon Elen (0622/192 Space, Again).

Dali was the AI on board the ship that returned Ken, P'nyssa and the rest to the Eldarfaroth (0672/079 Coming Home).

Can you remember which story Wendy was in? I worked out why I thought Wendy was a Rhysh, the person at the front desk in 0544/118 was called Wendy, and my brain mis-applied the name.

For Wendy, yep. The story is "Katherine Hawkwind". I looked at a couple of stories where I knew an AI was addressed.

Lancelot was the AI living nearest to Amanda Ohadi at the start of the Planetfall arc, and transferred on board the Nyano Handele for the trip.

By 01022/240 Planetfall: The Handback, the fifth AI of Rhysh was Alyson.

Seem to think Lexander was the AI at an arcology, seemed to be some type of pseudo military base which also seemed to have civilian residents including that certain mousey girl. Could be wrong on that.
