My last two laptops have all been named for some dangerous feminine AI from anime (for very flexible definitions thereof): Ai, Lain, and Kusanagi. Now I'm looking for one for my new machine, and I'm leaning toward Kurumi, but there are other possibilities:
  • Miyu, from Mai-HiME
  • Chi, from Chobits
  • Maico, from Anna Maico
  • Mahoro, from Mahoromatic
  • Jenny, from My Life as a Teenage Robot
  • Kosmos, from Xenosaga
  • Anevka, from Girl Genius
  • Ping, from Megatokyo
So many possibilities! Anyone got a favorite or a counter-suggestion?

Good point, but only if I were buying a Mac.

Eve, from Applegeeks
Freya, also from Chobits

I chose Xipan, from The Gameplayers of Zan;
there is, of course, the trivial example of Landru, from Star Trek

Well, it's not anime, but I've always liked Romy, the ship's avatar on Andromeda.

How about Paprika from the movie of the same name? The movie blurs the line between dreams and reality. Much like your stories do for me.

Omoikane, the battleship Nadesico's AI.

Though if you had 3 machines to name, the obvious choice would be Melchior-1, Balthazar-2, and Caspar-3, but you could just call one system Magi, especially if it has multiple cores.

Or you could just do what Bungie does and name an AI after a historical sword. Nagelring, Balmung, and Angurvddel are especially nice.

Ooh, Melchior, Balthazar, and Caspar.... that would be sweet, but I've only got one, and I am kinda looking for a girl's name here.

Rei?

Asuka or Misato would be better if following the "dangerous" theme.

Personally, I think Mahoro would be best (after all, she is an android).

I think Pings a great name: because not only does it have the hardcore Megatokyo connotation but you get the idea of 'pinging' the rest of the world - sending communications out and seeing what comes back. Its a nice image!!!

Feminine, yes. Dangerous, yes, in a cold calculating unfeeling way. Anime, not so much. 'Mother' from the original Alien.

GladOS and Shodan are both fine, fine choices. Aside from that, I do very much like Miyu...

I'd vote for SHODAN, but I don't think Elf ever played the copy of System Shock 2 I gave him. Neculturney.

Oo! SHODAN is one of the creepiest and most menacing AIs ever. Definitely voted for (also, Elf, seriously... play System Shock 2!).

"Look at you, hacker: a pathetic creature of meat and bone, panting and sweating as you run through my corridors. How can you challenge a perfect, immortal machine?"

The original System Shock would have to be one of the best and most creepy games I have ever played. Consider this another vote for SHODAN!

Too bad it has to be AI. Looking at the three you've already chosen, Molly Millions'd fit right in.

(Anevka's neat, but I've never seen the anime it's from.)

I could Suggest EVE from 'Megazone 23' one of the three anime series that Carl Macek spliced together to create Robotech.

Date: 2007-12-14 02:00 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] srmalloy.livejournal.com
Macek spliced together Super Dimension Fortress: Macross, Southern Cross, and Genesis Climber Mospeada to make up Robotech so that he had enough episodes that American broadcasters would buy it; at the time, Megazone 23 existed as a single OVA, which was useless to him as far as TV episodes went, although he did have plans to use footage from it for a Robotech movie. After Cannon Films saw the dubbed OVA, they said they "couldn't understand it", and Macek added footage from Southern Cross, after which Cannon Films was happy with it. However, due to strong negative reactions from audiences in the few theaters in Texas it played at for its initial release, it never got wide distribution. Megazone 23 Part II and Part III were released later; the only connection Macek had with these was that Harmony Gold dubbed Part II into English for the Japanese market (for educational purposes, the way that Japanese books will be translated into English for students of the language).

I dunno. When I think of Miyu I always think Vampire Princess Miyu, and really, cute as she is, do you really want a computer named after a blood sucker?

I personally like Chi, of the examples you gave, because of what it means outside the context of anime.

Canal, from Lost Universe? I don't know if she's deadly and dangerous enough, though.

Nuku Nuku from All-Purpose Cultural Cat-Girl Nuku-Nuku? She's not exactly an AI, but...

Ah, what about Ifurita, from El-Hazard?
