I just heard Santorum's interview with Bill O'Rielly, where he talks about how "artificial" birth control is "something that lets people do what they want to do without the responsibility that comes with it. I think it's wrong. I think it's harmful to women."

I bet Santorum wears a seatbelt. I bet he vaccinated his kids. Where is the respect before God that his faith demands, when he drives, and sends his children out into the public, while shielding them from the responsibility that comes with driving, or even meeting other people?

Ohhh, but it's all about the SEX, don't you know. Santorum's stance is obvious: he wants to punish women for having unauthorized sex, and the punishment he wants to inflict is pregnancy and subservience before men. The entire Republican Party base, men and women, want to punish their fellow human beings for having sex and pleasure. That's all there is to it.

I have never understood the "punishing unauthorized sex" mindset, which is why I would make a lousy Conservative Christian. "Oh wait, you want me to STOP having mind-numbing, consciousness-raising, sticky sweet consensual sex? I may just miss your next meeting, y'all."

I wouldn't be at all surprised if he did not vaccinate his kids...

I have trouble following logic of anyone that says taking birth control is irresponsible.

This.

I don't care WHY they feel it's wrong. Having sex without a) contraception or b) planning to have a child (including saving money, taking pre-natal vitamins, etc) is irresponsible.

There's a socioeconomic end to this as well and it's pretty foul. People who don't(or if Santorum has his way *can't*) make use of birth control have larger families. This in turn means the money/time/energy that the parents have to spend per child goes down while also incentivizing the parents to find outside institutions to help lessen the load (churches anyone?). this in turn will have a negative impact on the educational and intellectual development of the children in question due to lack of resources and time for oversight that the parents will have. we know from I don't even know how many studies that social conservatives tend to be from the lower end of the graph in terms of both education and socioeconomic position. so in this case Scam-torum and his vile little cadre of backers are more or less trying to breed a big new batch of morons to keep them in money and rent boys for another generation.

And never mind the myriad of uses of birth control for things other than pregnancy prevention. I swear, I never knew I'd love not having my cycle so much. But of course, that's "unnatural" and probably an affront to his god.

Ah. Here it is...

I think it's more about the mindset of the Catholic church: You shouldn't be having sex before marriage, and if you're married, you should be making tons of Catholics. Ergo, "something that lets people do what they want to do".
