Should I have different blogs?

I'm starting to wonder. I have my socio-political blog entries (tag: shrill) about religion, intelligent design, and then I have my life and family stuff (tags: life and kids, although I'm not reliable about these tags). I have my geeky things about Rails, databases, web design, C programming, living with Linux, and all the rest. I have my writing, of course, and I could always start a sex blog (although with my life the way it is right now, that might be more nostalgic than productive; I used to be able to go to events every week; now I'm lucky if I get out once every three months).

Just trying to figure out if my audiences would be bigger if there was stuff they didn't have to read to get what they wanted.

I may not be representative, but it's good to read the political stuff and the geeky stuff and the writing stuff... and I don't mind paging past the parenting stuff. In fact it's easier paging past those posts than it would be reading the other three quarters from three disparate sources.

No idea how that translates into potential changes in the size of your audience.

It would be harder for me to stalkfollow your life vicariously if I had to read separate journals. As a geek with interests socio-politics, geeky things, your writing, and sex, I'd likely sign up for all of your journals.

As for your family and kids... I've been reading your journal for years and its interesting to watch your daughters grow up through the eyes of what you wish to share. I'd keep reading that as well.

I totally agree with this. I end up reading pretty much everything, and I find it all interesting.

I enjoy the variety of my life, and feel the same of my friends.

Very well put. I agree.

Likewise

I've been reading this for quite a while myself, and I have to agree with the previous commenters. If you split things up into separate blogs, I would just have to read them all.

Jumping on the bandwagon. I'd much rather see things all in one place. I'd be inclined not to catch the programming one if they were separate, but I periodically learn something from those posts and would be sad to lose that.

I'd just subscribe to them all anyway. As is is fine.

The way most people read LJ is to just scan down their friends list. People will read a few lines and then skip past any entry that isn't interesting to them. I say leave it all in one.

Agreed -- I read LJ to keep up with friends (including a very few I know only virtually), not to learn about some topic. If I want to learn about some topic, there are much more reliable ways to do that.

I know you have no idea who I am, but I love reading your LJ--you're a celebrity in my memories, I remember reading stuff off Usenet by an "Elf Sternberg" as a teenager.

I prefer one single LJ with all your writing. Having it in one place makes it easier to read when it pops up on my Friends page and/or in my RSS aggregator. Anything I'm not terribly interested in is easy enough to scroll past. I love your religion, geekery, sex, family/parenting ... basically, everything ... as I deal with many similar issues myself.

Thanks for asking, anyway.

I originally only subscribed to your LJ in order to catch those posts that related to the 'Journal Entries'. Since that time I have come to agree with a great deal of your political opinions, I am in awe of your geekery, mightily impressed by your sex life, and amused by your family. I especially found the picture of a jar labeled 'Essence of Gelfling' supremely entertaining. Like many of those who've responded to this entry I would also have to follow all of your separate blogs to achieve the content density of your current Journal. If you're asking for an opinion I'd certainly suggest you leave things as they are, though I'll keep reading what you post however many places you should post it.

I, too, prefer the one-stop-shopping for "all things Elf". ^_^

I like the many elf-brained writings in one place, really... =) They're all fascinating.

I'm perfectly happy with the way things are. I read mostly for the socio-political and life stuff, but I do often pick up things I'm interested in among the more geeky subjects.

Don't change, things are just right.

Same here

I haven't been able to anything lately because my access to the web has been seriously curtailed. But I am able to keep up with you life and thoughts because everything is in one place. If you changed it, things would be more difficult.
