Yesterday, we were in a bit of a bind about getting everything done on our task list and getting the kids fed, so we stopped by Arby's to feed the kids and ourselves.

Arby's has a new line of sandwiches, on "normal" sandwich bread, called the "Market Fresh" line. And the entire line is billed as being more "deli-like," with fresher foods (what does that say about their regular line) and photographs piled high with vegetables. The entire advertising scheme shouts out, "These are healthier!"

They aren't. Omaha and I grabbed the nutrition sheet off the wall that they had at the store. The "Market Fresh" line is, on average, 680 calories per sandwich, whereas their ordinary sandwich line carries 380 calories per sandwich. It was mindblowing to see all this green, and yet all this fat.

Do the math yourself.

A lot of those sandwiches are loaded with mayonnaise or other sauces that are high in calories, and are also heavy in cheese. Now that I don't eat sandwiches that are covered with cheese and avoid mayonnaise (which I don't like all that much), I find that things taste a lot lighter!

There are times I really wish I didn't like mayo as much as I do. Unfortunately I have to be extra careful with the "lite" mayo because it does nasty things to my stomach.

Staggeringly bad

Wow. The average dinner at Arby's is just scary. Get a large roast beef sandwich, a large curly fries, and a large chocolate milkshake, and you're already at 547+631+660=1838 calories. And decide to add a dessert, (you're doomed if you like pecan sticky buns!), and you add at least 250 more calories. That's almost as much as most people are supposed to eat in a day... if they're active! This is horrible.

Worse, I know several (very obese) people that can eat 3 or four sandwiches, that milkshake, and the fries.

No, that's true. Drop the drink entirely to save even more calories, of course. Water is still good for you.

Our ineptness at thinking things through seems to be carefully cultivated.
