Weekendy Update Stuff
Jan. 9th, 2012 11:40 amIt was a very busy weekend here at the Villa Sternberg. Omaha and I bought a bed.
Which meant moving the new queen-sized bed out of the garage and into the living room to stage it, then dismantling and moving the king out of the bedroom into the garage space now cleared, and then installing the queen. It was a ton of work.
And when we were done, we realized that the new bed was almost six inches (15cm) higher than the old. It feels like we have to climb into bed, quite literally. It's so high that the nightstands, which used to be level with our mattress, are now far and away. The cat has an adventure jumping onto the damned thing.
We're still getting used to it. My back isn't used to the new mattress, which is single-sided. Omaha and I hadn't expected that. It turns out that bed manufacturers are using much less metal in their springs, but they're also using more springs, to make the mattress, and adding inches of "comfort material" (latex, foam and that terrible "memory foam" stuff), and that's what makes it thicker. Also, having to make only one side human-conformant reduces the cost.
I blame the cat for sleeping poorly last night, though. Haven't been cooking much, although I did make the kidlet Mac & Cheese after her first ballet class of the year, and her first one ever where she's going on toe. I need to make a run up to the massage store to get more oil; I can see I'm going to be giving footrubs for a while yet.

Date: 2012-01-09 10:38 pm (UTC)Took two weeks for the custom we ordered to arrive.
We declined the comfort top due to the added thickness, as that can make finding sheets a PITA. It is a king and is essentially a square, so it is not only double sided, it also rotates during the flipping cycle.
We declined getting a box-spring, because it was to be placed on a pedestal waterbed frame which was already 32 inches high. So I know what you mean about climbing into bed. If our house did not have 9' ceilings, the mattress would never clear the ceiling fan when being flipped...
Without the box-spring, the warranty went from 10yrs down to 7yrs.
At 12+ years, it is now starting showing signs of needing replaced.
Also.. I dont know why, but every time you put Villa in front of your name, my brain reads 'Stromberg'...

Date: 2012-01-10 05:35 am (UTC)We originally got the king as a way of ensuring we could co-sleep the kids, too. They're both too old for that, so we could afford to downsize.
Sounds like a private equity brand mattress...
