Yamaraashi-chan turns 10

Yamaraashi-chan... on ice!

As if my life wasn't insane enough, with a full day of mountain biking on Thursday followed by a full night of dancing and less than six hours of sleep, Friday was Yamaraashi-chan's birthday, and she wanted one at an ice skating rink.

The heroine of our story is Omaha, of course, who remembered that yesterday along with everything else we were going to get the presents and order the balloons. So she did that today, taking the bus out to Fry's to pick up a copy of Guitar Hero II, then coming back to get on the bus and running over to the party supply store to order balloons, then to the grocery store for a cake, then home, all by bus, in time to catch up with the kids getting home as well.

Yamaraashi-chan had asked eight friends to show up, and they did, along with two extra parents. The ice skating rink we chose was down in Kent, and it was very good to us. We had pizza and ice cream, Omaha found a cake with an ice skater on it, we had balloons and video games, we hired an instructor who walked the kids through the basic procedures, and then we went out on the ice.

Ice skating, I learned, is different enough from roller skating that the habits of each will get you into trouble with the other. The girls all seemed to be having a great time, although one, Yamaraashi-chan's friend from choir, was having a lot of trouble staying up and seemed very frightened. Omaha and I gave her extra attention. There were no serious injuries, but Kouryou-chan fell down so hard she wanted to get off the ice. "I think I broke my butt."

Everyone went home happy. Yamaraashi-chan enjoyed her gifts. I think her friends are on to her "My Littlest Pet Shop" thing because she got two Tamagotchi-like play units of that. Her friends are very sweet and run the gamut, from the shy but brave face forward out to the hyperconfident, assured and extroverted. I kinda want my kids to be more like the latter.

Omaha reports that, like me, she slept the sleep of the dead. I got nine hours, and she got more, and damn did we need it.

Congratulations, from what you write you and Omaha are not only good parents, but very thoughtful and kind. I'm glad that you had a good time and so did the children.

It is odd how different ice skating and roller skating are.
I took figure skating lessons as a kid and am still a fairly decent ice skater, but I can't roller skate to save my life.

I definitely agree with you. Though I roller skate very well, it took me a bit more time to pick up ice skating. The first time I ice skated, many years ago, I could barely get away from the side of the wall. This time I didn't have a problem, and though I fell a few times, I did much better. Still not as good or balanced as roller skating, though.

And Kouryou-chan, who has a hell of a time on roller skates, seemed to be so much better on ice skates. I was really surprised and very happy to see that. And Yamaraashi-chan just took off like a shot.

I think we'll be going out to the ice rink more often after this.
