I can kinda see what King County Metro was trying to say with their latest "Oh boy! Work for us, drive a bus!" campaign, and maybe I'm in a morbid mood today, but when I saw this banner on the side of the bus this morning my first reaction was, "How do I know those toes aren't swinging from a noose?"

I presumed they WERE swinging from a noose, and it was a comment on the delays often encountered on mass transit.

Have you seen PotC 3 yet? It starts with mass hangings, so that was my first thought, too.

Could have been worse

Just be glad they aren't black toes. Then "Oh, Boy" would be truly pejorative. It's hinting at gay enough, as it is.

The first thing that came to my mind was the ending of Brave New World (http://www.orwell.ru/library/others/huxley/e/ebnw_09.htm):

The door of the lighthouse was ajar. They pushed it open and walked into a shuttered twilight. Through an archway on the further side of the room they could see the bottom of the staircase that led up to the higher floors. Just under the crown of the arch dangled a pair of feet.

“Mr. Savage!”

Slowly, very slowly, like two unhurried compass needles, the feet turned towards the right; north, north-east, east, south-east, south, south-south-west; then paused, and, after a few seconds, turned as unhurriedly back towards the left. South-south-west, south, south-east, east...

I didn't think of the noose thing when I first saw the image, and upon reflection I think the fact that it's set outdoors, in the middle of a large open field, implies that it's someone jumping rather than someone hanging (what would they be hanging from?). Also the way the pants legs are flapping.

Can't say I saw it that way before, but I certainly will from now on...
