Okay, so I'm two days late with my Folklife! report. I had a lot of photographs to take care of, and they're all on my flickr account if you want to bother. I took a lot of photos of buskers, mostly because I wanted a documentary feel for what buskers look like and what they do when they're busking, at least in a setting like this. We arrived very early and sat down to listen to some Indian music, which was nice, while I took random photos of the crowd. We watched the Junior Drum & Pipe band at the Mural Ampitheatre, rendezvoused with FallenPegasus (here looking lively), and did lunch: gyros for Yamaraashi-chan and I, a hot dog for Kouryou-chan, and Omaha found that wonderful crepe' place I must have missed while looking for something to eat. Kouryou-chan snapped a photo of the Space Needle while we were there.
As is usual for this kind of gathering, there were vicious and annoying meme replicators everywhere, trying to get their last final hooks into the free will of everyone around them. They were surrounded by detractors, some holding signs with comments like "Propaganda!" and "Jesus is a Lie!" These in turn were surrounded by their own detractors. And on it went. There were a lot of them this year, many more than last year. I wonder why. The belly dancers were a lot more fun to look at, and they had better music.
Omaha went to the Persian music thing, but after lunch the girls weren't all that interested in walking around. Kouryou-chan pestered me for cotton candy and eventually I gave in. We sat on the edge of the great fountain, the steam and steel mushroom that is such a great source of entertainment during folklife. Especially during folklife, when there's so much to look it. Especially when, y'know, it's so very hot out. The fountain is so cool, and inviting.
Omaha caught up with us, and then went off to another event. I took the girls over to the wading pool, stopping by a little photo board to record the event. Kouryou-chan scrapped her ankle and became very whiny, and Yamaraashi-chan decided that she didn't want to get wet again so she and I sat on the edge of the pool, took out our books (she's still reading Xanth, and I finished Greg Egan's Diaspora) until Omaha caught up with us. She was done; we headed home.
I think I got a little too much sun. I was pretty wiped when we landed, but we made a quick dinner and put the kids to bed. All in all, a pretty good Folklife. It's a shame that there was only one nice day of weather; Folklife needs and deserves better.
