Saturday stuff.
Mar. 31st, 2007 11:45 pm It was a busy day away from the Villa. I woke up around eight, but most of the family got moving around nine, and we had to be at Kouryou-chan's school around ten because it was one of the many volunteer days when we spend our time trying to improve some aspect of the school's grounds. We got the girls moving and there with time to spare, set out all of the tools and set to work.
I love my wife. As we were waiting for others to show up, someone from the volunteer party called to ask for details, and I heard Omaha say, "Well, the plot we're weeding today is about four meters by nine meters, but we also need some branches cut. How big are they? Oh, an inch and a half, at most." Anyone so casually comfortable shifting back and forth between English and metric makes me happy.
I ended up on the roof anyway, cleaning moss. Decimated my wire brush, but the entire roof over the Toddler 1 playground is now clear of the green crud.
I had to chauffeur Yamaraashi-chan over to the West Seattle Bowling Alley, which Omaha insists I've been to before but I don't remember it. I liked the place when I saw it. It looks very family-friendly and dedicated to bowling as a sport, rather than as an excuse to drink beer. There were more kids bowling there than at Acme, which is a new high-tech super bowling alley down by the mall.
We got home around 4:30. Omaha and I took a shower together (yum) and I have material for a new story. Then we went downstairs and played Quake IV and I'm not sure what happened but she totally kicked my ass. Wiped the freaking floor with me. Twice! I mean, the second game ended 10 to 7, but the first game she beat me 10 to 2! WTF?
Omaha took a nap after that and I settled into making dinner. I made vegetable fried rice with half a red bell pepper, a shallot, a carrot, a small head of broccoli, two eggs, baby corn, water chestnuts, soy sauce and four cups of rice. It was excellent. It was so excellent, in fact, that Kouryou-chan ate all of her dinner. I have to remember that recipe. I've stopped using frozen bags of vegetables; the crystals that form from freezing shred the soluble fiber in vegetables and they lose much of their food value.
I walked Yamaraashi-chan over to her mother's house so she could take care of the parakeets while her mother is off at some gaming convention. I noted with some amusement that a racoon or other animal had gotten into her yardwaste bin (Omaha reported seeing a damn huge raccoon over in the neighbor's yard recently) and tipped it over, strewing its contents onto her driveway. Amusement because she's absolutely adamant I not step on her property. Otherwise I might have felt inclined to be neighborly. I don't agree with her, but in this case I'll choose not to antagonize her. Ever read I Am Legend? Y'know the scene with the vampire jumping over the garden hose? Yeah, that's me.
Meanwhile, Kouryou-chan had gotten ahold of my camera and taken photos of every one of her My Little Ponies in a "fashion show." No, I won't torture you with those.
It was my night to put the kids to bed, so I started up the bathtub and proceeded to douse both of them. The new Lush store in downtown is open and I bought a new cake of bubble soap. Yamaraashi-chan, who normally loathes baths, had to be convinced to cease playing with the bubbles. Let's hear it for Lush! I have very silly, very wonderful children.

I don't think I'll show this to the kids, though. Not because I think they would be scared...but because I think that they won't. o_0

Date: 2007-04-01 10:34 pm (UTC)I really enjoy reading your blog. It's fun to see how my age-cohort is growing up and handling reaching 40, and it's really nice to see that there are other people out in the ether who think carefully and try their best to be good parents, partners, and citizens. It's hard to say I'd be you in a parallel universe (for starters, I'm female, happily straight, and living in the Rocky Mountains) but I love the look at your thoughts that I get to see via this blog. Thanks for the regular reminders that there are still reasonable people about in the country.
