Bleah. Omaha, Kouryou-chan and I all seem to have come down with something. Omaha and I are completely dragging, and Kouryou-chan is ill enough that yesterday she threw up and her temperature reached for 101. She's much better today.

As is the case every year, today was Kouryou-chan's well-child appointment. She was feeling icky most of the morning but managed to keep down a breakfast bar and some milk, so we had high hopes when we got there. The nurse who did the intake remembered her from two years ago but ran through the usual list of things: developmental habits, close friends, anger management issues, the whole ball of wax. Kid's basically way ahead on most things, although with an 85th percentile height and a 25th percentile weight, Omaha and I continue to be worried about her not eating well. Funny thing is, she's got a ton of energy almost all the time: she runs and runs and runs until she just drops, and that usually takes a long time compared to her peers.

Omaha is happy: she got a Mac G5 really cheap, and spent most of the afternoon transplanting the guts of her G4 into it. Apparently, the G5 is even more annoying to work on hardware-wise than the G4. But she's happy. And I get the spare 100GB PATA drive she has lying around, so I'll have a Windoze™ GameOS box again real soon.

I really wanted to write all weekend, but never found the energy or the will. I mean, this should be a high-energy sex scene next before Dove turns over and asks a dangerous question to the two men she's been fucking for the past three days. And I just don't seem to have the gumption to write it. Still, I'm at 117,917 words, so I'm doing okay. I'm ahead of my quota, at any rate!

Woo-hoo! G5, cheap! :-) 10.3 or 10.4?

10.4. The thing sounds like a freakin' airplane when the fans go all-out.

Yes, in fact they do! Now, if you think that the G5 is a pain to work on compared to the G4, which wasn't bad at all. The Mac Pro units are a magnitude harder to deal with. :-/

Yuck. Yeah, the biggest problem with the G5 was getting the RAM in there...I mean, I felt like I was working on a Mac truck, not a Mac computer! Heh. At one point I seriously considered picking up a hammer to get the RAM in. And I didn't know until I consulted with the guy I bought it from that because the machine had two sets of RAM lines to install, that if you install more than one stick, you have to install each stick in a separate set, and in the same numbered slot too. bleah.

But it works now (I'm posting from it) and I'm downloading updates at the moment. The real test will be when I load Civ IV into it. Yum!

Absolutely true about the RAM. You have to do it in sets, alas.

I'll drop you a line via email. :-)

I've been setting up an early model G5 for the spousal unit. The early models (approx. pre-April 2005) had an external port for a 802.11x antennna. Turns out we needed it; the internal antenna couldn't maintain a reliable signal. Once I had the antenna, it solved all of the problems.

But I like the way they eliminated the ribbon cables for the hard drive bays.

I was so used to those ribbon cables. LOL. And I didn't know that it only used SATA hard drives until after I got it...so I had to buy a new hard drive. No biggie, Elf gets the old PATA that I was going to put into it, which means that he doesn't have to buy one for his machine (although because the hard drive was for my work box, I have to "sell" it to him...annoying IRS rules).
