Oh, and I have identified a new form of movie: Battle Porn. Thanks to LoTR, we now have the power to create incredibly detailed, hyperreal depictions of bloody battle in all its terrible glory. And the movie linked to above does that in spades. Personally, I can't wait to watch it.

Sweet. This movie looks like it might actually have more eye candy than Men in Skirts ( aka Troy ) and maybe even Gay Men in Skirts ( aka Alexander ).

The shorter trailer has a few more rockin' scenes, including this bit of dialogue: Persian Emissary: "The thousand nations of the Persian Empire shall descend upon you! Our arrows will block out the sun!" Stelios: "Then we will fight in the shade."

That is a pretty sweet quote. I grinned when I heard it. I hope it means they'll have decent dialogue. Yes, the trailer does have some awesome scenes in it. The visuals definitely look tasteh (sic), but just about anyone can do visuals these days. Of course, starting off in an Apple IIe/DOS/Windows 3.11 world, having an ATARI/C64/NES gaming background, and being in possesion of a vivid imagination make "shiny graphics" less important on a lot of levels. They're pretty, they help make the world come alive, but graphics alone can't tell a story or give a character depth.

I haven't actually read the graphical novel; didn't even know it existed until I saw your post. Maybe I'll see if I can pick up or borrow a copy.

Decent dialogue + good storytelling ( I hope ) + half naked, good looking men = one very pleased Sar.

That line of dialogue is FAMOUSLY GREAT but NOT VERY ORIGINAL...

The 'fight in the shade' bit is one of the most famous bits of dialogue known to practically all scholars (professional or serious amateur) of Greek history. IIRC, Herodotus is the historian primarily responsible for our knowing about it today. It's because of dry, terse humor like this, attributed to Spartans on several famous occasions, that the English language includes the expression 'Laconic wit.' :-)

IMHO what would really be impressive would be a film or novel of the Persian Wars that managed *not* to include that bit of dialogue, and to be pretty good anyway. :-)

I think that would be Vice President Dick Chenney. Bush seems more like Jar-Jar. Either that or Howdie Doodie, which effectively would kill the Star Wars metaphor.
