Jeff Sharlet spoke with one of the participants. I don't know that I believe his motivation, but that Haggard vacated his seat that fast tells me there's something noteworthy going on there.

Date: 2006-11-03 05:22 am (UTC)As someone else pointed out, Haggard is a werid one to go after. Despite his evangelical megachurch holdings, Haggard is not rabidy anti-gay. He even told his flock not to vote for an anti-gay-marriage law in Colorado, saying that there were many sins in the Bible that he would not want to see in the civil law.
If it all turns out to be true, you can just see the evangelicals imploding in a witchhunt to find those among them who've "turned a blind eye" to homosexuality and interrogating those peoples' private lives.

I haven't yet asked him about the whole deal, mostly because ... well, he's probably dealing with quite enough fallout right now. As much as I'm privately chuckling about this thing, well, no sense creating additional stress on my parents by laughing out loud.
