Date: 2006-08-25 02:17 am (UTC)Pluto is still a planet, just a "dwarf planet," instead of a "classical planet."
If they'd gone the other way, we'd have 12 planets now ... and counting. Given the way things have been going in astronomy these days, we'd be adding 10-20 new "planets" every decade.
Considering, too, that The Moon is larger than Pluto, you'd really have to start calling Moon-Earth a double-planet if you made Pluto-Charon a double-planet.
Still, I think it's a good compromise. When we're all dead, and schoolchildren are sick of memorizing all 57 dwarf-planets waaaay out in the depths past Neptune, they can start ignoring Pluto. We can still consider it the 9th Planet.
