I was driving Omaha to a meeting the other day. She had her laptop open and was reviewing the documents she needed, when she cursed briefly. "I'm missing one of the documents. I know where it is on the net, but I didn't grab it before we left." I spotted a standalone, non-chain cafe' standing by the edge of the road, across from the restaurant where her meeting was taking place. It was closed.

I pulled into the drive through. "What are we doing here?" she asked.

"Do they have wifi?"

"I doubt it." But they did, and she was able to retrieve the documentation she needed before the meeting. The signal was weak from the parking lot but it was enough.

How fun!

Whenever I hear of someone using a laptop in a car I cringe a bit. A friend of mine, [livejournal.com profile] ardaniel was using her laptop in the passenger seat when the car she was in was involved in an accident. She got the laptop screen in her face, sending glass and LCD goop into her eyes. IIRC it was the airbag inflating that did it. She suffered permanent damage, and has undergone numerous surgeries over the years to keep 'laser welding' her retina as it detaches, amongst other things. And she will always be at risk for blindness in the eye that took most of the damage.

And on a different note - clever finding the WiFi.
