I make a promise this day to God to remain sexually pure until the day I give myself as a wedding gift to my husband. I know that God requires this of me that he loves me and that he will reward me for my faithfulness.

Y'know, there's a fine line between giving your children the information they need to make well-informed decisions (whatever your ideological bent) and actively being involved in your child's sex life, and this little bit of tripe is over that line.

Oh, the father then responds,

I choose before God to cover my daughter as her authority and protection in the area of purity. I will be pure in my own life as a man, husband and father. I will be a man of integrity and accountability as I lead, guide and pray over my daughter and as the high priest in my home. This covering will be used by God to influence generations to come.

Okay, now I'm squicked.

Granted, I have a son rather than a daughter, but regardless I chose a different path.

At about that time in his life I also taught him how to be "sexually pure" - use condoms every time you fuck, communicate well with your sexual partners, look to avoid STDs and pregnancies, and please consider masturbation a ready alternative to penis-in-vagina.

I don't really want to know what they mean by "cover". Where do you find this crap, Elf?

Let me guess...these are the same "Bible-based" "fundamentalist" folk who claim that using liturgy is "a hindrance to the Spirit" and puts "man's words above God's"? If they want to show their commitment to raising their kids in their faith, or for the kids (say, teens) to show their commitment, what's wrong with the baptism/confirmation rite?

(The cynic in me thinks they don't want to have to promise "to strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being" ... )
