A year ago, I bought a brand new computer. In parts. While in Fry's, I discovered that they did not have the case I wanted, but they had the "gamer's equivalent" for about $20 more. I bought that one.

That was an experience I will be repeating from now on. This case is quiet, much more quiet than the older "office grade" case. This morning, I had the quad-cores running all-out loading the Human genome (homo_sapiens_core_65_37) into MySQL. DNA sequencing took about two minutes, and the whole alignment features collection took about ten minutes total. The hottest spot on the motherboard was 112°F (44C).

Sweet!

1) I'm not sure you quite understand just how creepy/mad scientist that sounds.

2) Imagine making that statement to yourself ten years ago...

Oh, I'm very aware of how mad-sciency (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ScienceRelatedMemeticDisorder) it sounds. I've been playing it up all week on Twitter. It's been a blast, this crash course in bioinformatics. And while Humans took 10 minutes, bread yeast took only a few seconds. I can't wait to start loading in all the Human mutation stuff-- that's six times as big as just the ordinary human genome.

Ten years ago, I was thrilled to be walking around with an industrial quality database and an industrial quality typesetting system on my laptop.

These days, I'm considering marrying the two together.
