V for Vendetta

So, last night lisakit and I went out to see V for Vendetta. It was an okay flick, and yes, the tagline, "People should not be afraid of their government. Governments should be afraid of their people," was quite effective. It has a signature Wachowski momement (too signature, in my opinion, it detracted from the whole film). I will say the actor who played V did a fabulous job of communicating emotion strictly with his hands and body language, almost a mime routine. And his introductory patter is nifty, but really, that's about it. Unfortunately, it sags a bit in the middle, which isn't terribly rare for a movie like this.

All in all, a nice time. I was glad to have some time to go to a movie with a friend. I don't have that very often.

I've read the comic, but haven't seen the movie yet (it's not out where I am). The comic is amazing, and I'm hoping to get some impressions about the movie from people who've read the comic (the author, Alan Moore, has some pungent things to say about the movie, but I'm reserving judgment).

I think one of his best pics was Bedrooms and Hallways in which he plays a young and enthusiastically gay man trying to convince his best friend to get out of the closet.

The best lampoon of his appearance in The Matrix and Fellowship of the Ring so close to each other was, in my opinion, this Dork Tower comic... I would pay good money to have that scene on DVD.

What they got right in the film (Rose's inerrogation, V confronting the doctor in her bedroom) they got very right. What they got wrong (Evie's job, the ending of the film, Prothero) they got wrong enough to bother me. I think it's fine as a "modernized" re-telling of the V story, but not as an adaptation of the original. I felt the LotR trilogy found the right balance between staying faithful to the original, changing things that work in the book but not in film, and modernizations to make the film accessible to today's audiences (e.g. Arwen).

I've never read the comic so that may have helped me enjoy the movie more. I thought it was pretty decent, but yah, it had some filler in the middle that made me want to fast forward. It was a nice action flick though, with some good humor, and the explosions were fun. :p I'd recommend it at matinee price.

I commented that it was interesting how many "overthrow your government" films have been coming out lately.

I enjoyed it, and thought of it in the same thought as another I just saw recently on video, "Good Night & Good Luck". Two different movies, but both capsulized as "speaking up effectively when it is dangerous to do so". I commented to my partner that I was really glad that such movies as these two are being made in today's increasingly oppressive environment.
