Normally, we associate religious moonbat motivation with Republican candidates (as in the case of South Dakota's Bill Napoli, who basically said that the only exception he could think of to his state's abortion ban was the Sodomized Religious Virgin Exception).

But now news comes from Ohio that a Democrat running for the Senate has stated that he would like to see the death penalty imposed for "practicing homosexuals" and that anyone teaching evolutionary biology "has no rights" and no expectation to protection of any kind from the law.

I can't tell if this is just an everpresent fringe of American ridiculousness magnified by the panopticon oversight of the blogosphere or an unusual spasm of wingnuttery brought on by the emboldened and now desperate to hold on to their overreach conservative movement.

Hm... that's the second nutjob in as many days - [livejournal.com profile] dark_christian had a post about a "biblically-based" Texas candidate for Governor.

This makes me so very scared. I worry about our nation. I worry that in my lifetime many of the freedoms I have enjoyed will be taken away from me. I really see nothing to dispell this fear.

I'd say he hasn't a prayer of unseating Sherrod Brown, who is very popular here in Ohio. It may be conservative, but the 'nut' factor isn't quite high enough for this loon to make much progress. (Espically since the Democrat minority in this state is just about as liberal as your average group of Democrats, and he has to get past *them* first.)

I used to live in Kentucky. Southern Ohio had the scariest fundamentalist movement I'd ever seen. Maybe the rest of Ohio is better, but this guy is spot on with the people I was arguing with.

*chuckle* He's a Democrat who's been in Congress 12 years. His district is in northern Ohio, with a good portion of Cleveland and Akron included in it. That area is definately different from southern Ohio.

So he should have some idea of what a politician can get away with saying.

It does make me wonder why he thinks it'll get him more votes, but I'll guess a lot of votewrs won't be doing any serious thinking. They won't notice that this rape victim is little different from another woman who was "asking for it". They'll see the stuff about being religious and about abstinence.

I was refering to his opponent, Sherrod Brown. He's the one whose been in Congress for that long, and is a fairly liberal Democrat. http://www.sherrodbrown.com/

That man's not a Democrat. He may be registered to vote as one, but he sure as heck doesn't represent their values.

Which then begs the question: why does the party not disavow him? An odious compromise to gain/retain power, perhaps?

Because he doesn't even have any official standing in the party yet, I imagine. Google knows next to nothing about him, so I suspect he just decided to run for Senate out of the blue.
