Hot on the heels of my discovering the Many Personalities Of Frank Zappa, I realize that I somehow managed to make it to 39 years of age with my love of both complicated jazz fusion, progressive rock, and heavy metal, yet without any knowledge whatsoever of Dream Theater

How the Hell do these things happen?

(And yes, that is a little interrobang at the end of the first paragraph.)

If you like them, check out Derek Sherinian's "Black Utopia".

How did you do that odd character?

It's just the HTML entity ‽. You can type it out just like that and it'll show up in your posts. I quite like the interrobang; I'm a bit put out that it never caught on the way it should have.

Ah. Thanks.

Interestingly, that led me to other unusual punctuation marks:

I liked Dream Theater from Images and Words to Scenes From a Memory, with Awake being my favorite of them. I haven't really been thrilled with their work since, though I have not heard the most recent album. On the subject of jazz fusion, progressive rock and heavy metal, you might like the Liquid Tension Experiment albums, which featured Portnoy, Petrucci and Rudess (before he joined Dream Theater) with bassist Tony Levin playing a mix of composed and improvised music. Also on the Magna Carta label (otherwise known for spotty prog tribute albums and cheesy prog-metal and neo-prog acts), Tony was in a trio called Bozzio Levin Stevens (Terry Bozzio, ex-Zappa, and Steve Stevens, ex-... Billy Idol) which put out two stellar albums of fusion improvs.
