I stopped by QFC and bought some ice cream. They were having a two-for-one sale on Dryer's brand, but only if one of the two was the seasonally available pumpkin-flavored. I can't figure out if that's a consolation ("You bought the pumpkin? Here, to make up for it, we'll give you something else free.") or a desperate maneuver to get the cooler cleared ("You bought some Dryers? Please, take one of the pumpkins! Just get it out of our store!").

Actually, it's not even that bad. Kouryou-chan likes it, but Yamaraashi-chan just wanted the vanilla. The pumpkin ice-cream tastes a lot like pumpkin pie, complete with natural spices, which are listed on the side: cinammon, cloves, nutmeg and ginger.

Lifehack of the week: use one grocery store and learn everybody's name who works there. Being able to shout, "Hey, Joe, I need a checker on aisle 3!" can really make a difference in your getting in and getting out without getting lost.

Pumpkin and vanilla ice creams together sound like a nice combo to me.

Our local Safeway has a checker with the same unusual first name as me, so that I am frequently disoriented while shopping there by hearing myself paged.

I recently read a romance novel where the heroine was taken from a convent by the death of her elder sister and forced to marry. The hero, it turned out, was an earnest man who waited months to take her virginity after marriage because he wanted her to understand what she was getting into and wanted her to want him. A third of the novel takes place while each of them, desperately in love with the other, tries to figure out what this feeling they have for the other really is and if what they've done by getting married is the right thing to do. It's actually quite wonderfully written, although by the fourth or fifth chapter you're saying to yourself, "Oh, just go do it already!"

It was very disorienting to read, as the heroine's name is "Elf."

You TEASE!

Dear Elf;

If it's possible, could you please post the title of that book? It sounds like something I would dearly love to inflict on my wife. (Besides, when you have praise for writing, I KNOW it's got to be good.)

Bryan.

I should add the caveat that it's "quite wonderfully written" for a romance novel, which always carries its own sort of weight. You have to like the genre in the first place. It is The Innocent (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0449006727/), by Bertrice Small. And I see it's available in paperback finally; I was only able to find it in a trade size.
