So, the police report is now part of the public record. Oh, boy, is it fun reading! First, he was drunk, with a BAC of 0.160, which is twice the legal limit. He failed a streetside sobriety test. "I perceived a strong odor of intoxicants on his person, which intensified when he spoke." Bureaucratese is such a strange language. Also, a witness said he saw "a yellow can" get thrown out the passenger side window, which was later identified as one of two open and very recently consumed cans of Twisted Teas Hard Iced Tea. Witnesses also confirm that I, and the car in front of me, and the car in front of her were all stopped at the light when a light-duty Ford pickup truck struck me square on, his left headlight hitting right about the center of my Forester. The physics of the accident must have been very weird, because he ended up nestled against the Honda; I was squeezed out of the wreck and into the next lane of oncoming traffic. He succeeded in destroying three cars in one blow, and doing at least cosmetic damage to a fourth.

Also, he had a loaded Ruger .357 magnum revolver in a holster on the passenger seat. I feel so safe knowing that.

Sadly, these are all only misdemeanors.

At least he had insurance.

I'm glad to hear that you are ok. I was sideswiped by an 18-wheeler earlier this year (it was changing lanes and didn't see my car in its blindspot), so you have my deepest sympathy for what you've been going through.

I bet he won't have insurance again for a while. Or have a license. Any idea if it was his first offense?

In any case, I'm glad you came out of it relatively OK.

There was nothing in the police report to indicate priors, no. Sadly.

Ouchie! Glad you survived relatively unscathed. The inconvenience sucks; here's hoping his insurance buys you a new and improved set of wheels.

Whatever it is, it'll have four-star crashworthiness. I like the Forester; I may just get another one.

However, I am completely hating on the automatic transmission in the rental. How do people drive those things?

I don't like automatics either. However, the past three months have inclined me to think that my next car will be an auto. (Simply because I've been unable to drive due to a clutch-pedal injury ... cognitive bias at work: it probably won't recur.)

I know, right? Every time I've needed to get a rental while mine was in the shop, it was an automatic.

My left foot continually smacked the floorboards as I tried to hit the nonexistent clutch. ^_^

Oy. Another Forester* saves its occupant. Glad you're ok.

*Over the weekend some friends hit a patch of ice, grazed a sign, and flipped end-over-end several times. A broken wrist, a broken clavicle, cuts and bruises, but they're otherwise ok.

Yeah. We just got notified of the market value for restoration, and we're going to have to go car shopping tomorrow. We have seven days left on the rental. I'm getting another Forester. That thing was amazing.
