I made tacos last night, as Yamaarashi-chan loves them and I had promised her something she liked after Kouryou-chan got her tortellinis and marinara the night before. Big tacos with home-made taco sauce and fresh salsa cruda (which, of course, neither one ate) and soft shells from the local Mexican grocer which are probably about the same quality as anything bought at Safeway. Oh, well. Predictably, Yamaarashi-chan devoured hers and Kouryou-chan picked at hers, eating the meat and cheese and leaving behind "the salad." I wonder if Mexican sour cream is any different from traditional English sour cream.

I suppose I should write something political. It's been a heck of a political week. The Christian Right is screaming that the V-Chip is too hard for Americans to program so the Logo channel needs to be abolished. Trying to blame Wilson for Karl Rove's monumental fsckup is just a distraction. SCO has more or less 'fessed up to committing either fraud on Microsoft and Sun, or committing conspiracy to defraud with Microsoft and Sun. But I just can't work up the energy. Doing the single parent thing, even for a short while, is draining.

It's been a hectic week at work; very shattered, very distracted. Mostly because the problem I'm working on is, on one level, a two-phase commit over a directed graph of data, and on another level, a really nifty graphical visual effect done in Javascript to make drop-down menus sexy. And it's really hard to wrap my head around the two-phase commit when we've been interviewing people like crazy and my manager is going out of town for a month on his honeymoon next week and the schedule's getting tight and the hardware's really cool and... oy!

I installed Quake 2 on my laptop, just 'cause I could. Descent 2, too. Didn't get to play either.

I have really learned one of David Allen's mantras this week: "You can do anything. You just can't do everything." Boy, ain't that the truth. I only got about half the projects done than I wanted to get done. Some of them are really good projects: the kitchen back counter is no longer awash in catalogs, magazines, recipe printouts and receipts; the rugs are vacuumed, the lawn clipped. I fixed the kitchen light which had burned out. I got all the external stuff done that needed to be done. But I never got to the downstairs filing, or vacuuming, or fixing the back porch light, or a gazillion other things I wanted to do while I had the time.

I didn't watch a single TV show, or movie, or anime. I didn't play any video games. I did get another 200 pages through Kushiel's Avatar. I did the pageflip on Omaha's radio station's website when she asked. She wasn't sure if I'd get the message on time.

Thank the goddess Omaha's coming home tonight. This household really takes two to run it.

I'd like to a) sympathize with you on the single parent thing, and
b) mention that it's only so hard because you actually care enough to do something besides nuke the kids frozen dinners, put them in front of the glowing babysitter and put off the laundry until it absolutly can't be anymore.

And I commend you for caring that much. :)

Heh. I'm not above making a lot of the things I made this week so we have leftovers later. I'm not above giving them an hour of TV and an hour of computer time (not that they've taken advantage of this offer this week-- the outdoors and all of the neighborhood kids take care of that).

Besides, I like cooking. If I had to do this for an extended period of time, I could see myself spending a Saturday filling up the deep freeze with "bake later" casseroles.

I'm not. It was a matter of realizing that it was a two-phase commit to do menus properly (create the underlying state, then bit-flip all of the items to properly reflect that state). I've got it working now.

Righty o - just when I read that, the geek inside jumped out and got curious. Always looking to expand my knowledge or to assist when and if I can. Thanks for the update.
