So, I woke up this morning to discover that my desktop was deader 'n a friggerzoid. It looked like the power supply had given up the ghost. But I went down to Fry's and bought a replacement, stuck it in, and it came back up without a hitch. And now it has a much more reliable power supply; a 480Kw instead of the old 350Kw that used to be there (It was actually the smallest thing I could find that would fit in my box!) and when I turned it on, for once the BIOS did not complain that the power was out of spec.

Let's hope this lasts at least a year or two. The last one barely survived a year.

Yes. It was the power supply that came with the box; Omaha pointed out to me that it has lasted two years, not one. Be that as it may be, the BIOS always complained that the voltages were off and always a little low, even the VCores. It's amazing it worked as well as it did if those values were to be believed.

I expect you mean 480 W (equivalent to about eight lightbulbs), not 480 KW (small electrical substation).

yeah,

that caused me a slight cognitive dissonance.. (what's wrong with this picture...)

of course you see that sort of thing when you let programmers play with hardware ;-P

I'm glad that worked out for you.

The constant overload is probably what killed your old one. Either a cap finally blew, or the windings finally shorted.

I'm just pleased that it was cheap to replace and there doesn't seem to have been any damage to the downstream hardware. Ah, well, the trip game me a chance to break into Japanese lesson 66.

i got a question

Elf, One of the folks on my LJ friends list put out a call to notify you of someone printing and selling copies of your work. Since I check in here periodically I figured I'd drop a line in a comment.

http://www.a1fl.com/

These folks are apparently in the UK and taking cash for both original and fandom stories. At least seven of the many authors are folks I know and none of them gave permission to this group to use their work.

Goodluck with the hardware troubles.

Ummm, and some of the stories are yours, Elf. I think you're going to want to cause an international incident.

I just thought you might like to know that after reading this post (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fanthropology/11912.html) about some guy named Russel selling other people's work. I looked through it and found out he is selling your written work (http://www.a1fl.com/XT/XTELFS.HTML).
