Madness! Madness! Kouryou-chan is Five!
Nov. 14th, 2004 08:26 pmI awoke Saturday morning to the sensation of deep and unabiding terror, for today was Kouryou-chan's fifth birthday and, in this day, she would be inviting thirteen of her favorite friends over for three hours of screaming, singing, getting wired on sugar, and the opening of presents.
Omaha and I had to set up a stage for Kouryou-chan and Yamaarashi-chan, and make decorations (CDs hung from the ceilings, a backdrop, and tinsel. I love my hot melt glue gun). We had to feed the kids-- thank the gods that my waffles freeze okay. We had to bathe them; we were out late last night at a friend's house and the girls missed their bath time.
omaha then ran out to take care of so last-minute food and gift arrangements, and she came back at one. I then had to run out myself for the grab bag goodies, the cake, refreshments for the adults, and even a new IDE cable for my desktop.
When I got home, the first guests had started to arrive. The karaoke machine rental was a little late; he'd dropped something in his van on the drive over, but he was a very friendly and accomodating businessman, and even figured out that the children's disks in his unit had been put in out-of-order, before leaving us to our devices.

Kouryou-chan at the microphoneThere was one young man who knew how to work the microphone. He was way too enthused to be on-stange. But it was Kouryou-chan who really sang the loudest-- it was her party and it played to her skills-- and what did she choose? Heather Alexander's Happen'n Frog of Cambreadth. And we worked our way through every child-- a task taking well over an hour-- before we moved the kids outside, then I ran up and got the ice cream cake out of the freezer, assembled five candles, and presented it to the kids. Kouryou-chan did a great job of blowing out the candles and then there was a rousing round of Happy Birthday.
The cake mysteriously dissapears.
Afterwards, it was more singing and the opening of presents.
fallenpegasus showed up, bringing a delightful poster of her favorite TV show and a couple of books. There was a ton of swag. Thirteen kids bring a lot of goodies. Mostly clothes, blessed be, and games. There was one set of Barbies-- it seems inevitable, but somehow we've avoided a tide. Naturally, within twenty minutes of playing, it was naked. Omaha tried to keep it organized,
Omaha in the eye of the storm. but it was an insane sight all the same. The kids were as surprised by what she got, and were as thrilled to hand it over to Kouryou-chan, as she was to get it, if not moreso. She loved the books. She's read them all herself already, except for the big one that FallenPegasus got: The Annotated Alice.
Eventually, all of the children filtered out, and the karaoke man came and took the unit away, and we were left with a deep pile of rubbish and stuff. We decided it was too late and went out to eat at The Outback. By the time we got home, it was time for bed. I got them into pyjamas, brushed teeth, and read them their books, asked Yamaarashi-chan to do her eye exercises while Kouryou-chan and I fed the cat, and then it was time for bed.

Scary how much our littlest girls look alike.
