So, Yamaarashi-chan comes over tonight and tries to convince me that she doesn't have any homework. "My teacher didn't give me a reading log sheet," she insists, "So we don't have any reading today."

Unfortunately for her, her teacher is now sending out weekly homework assignments to her parents. It was a bit of a two-step to extract it (what it is with school admins sending out all of their updates as MS Word attachments?), but Linux is hot enough that the lightweight word processor AbiWord extracted it quite nicely even on my pokey 266. It consisted of twenty minutes of reading and eight practice sentences with half the words of the week.

Poor kids. When I was her age, I might occasionally get away with lying about my homework. But Yamaarashi-chan can't, because email is ubiquitous and cheap. Panopticon, anyone?

Kouryou-chan was a bit jealous so she grabbed a copy of one of my art books and started reading the text aloud. She's a bit faster than Yamaarashi-chan, but not by much.

Omaha made a squash risotto that was just delicious. The girls went out back to help me pick the parsley, which was fun in the cold and dark. They took turns holding the flashlight while the other picked leaves.

And I'm all caught up on my Japanese homework myself. Yay! I skipped two weeks because my CD player was being cranky and had to back up and do a few practice sessions over, but I'm ready for Lesson 43 tomorrow. And as soon as I started doing the classes, dialogue in anime and even jdramas started to make more sense to me. I guess I just need to keep those brain cells active.
