So, this afternoon I set in motion the inevitable "build me a new kernel" program. It takes a few steps, a bit of a dance, because of my hardware and my need for ALSA rather than OSS sound. But it was easier this time; ALSA 1.0.6 doesn't copy the whole damned tree when it builds, so build times are much shorter now. The only real dance is the need to build the Thinkpad-specific drivers for the hardware-based hibernation facilities. Otherwise, it all went in without a hitch.

I also built the new infrared toolkit, and tried it out. After a little experimentation, I can now once again upload to my Palm. Yay! Once again I can transfer e-books from my laptop to my handheld without having to use the desktop and a serial cable as an intermediary.

The other thing that seems to be working is the ISD200 module for USB storage. I say "seems" because I bought an external hard-drive for this thing, but it hasn't arrived yet. Okay, the external hard-drive is also a cheap, used MP3 player, about 1/3rd the price of an iPod. I got it mostly so I can do my Japanese lessons. Ha, you thought I'd abandoned those like every other project, didn't you? Nope, just finished lessons 41 & 42 last week.

Sounds like a fun time; I'm probably going to have to do a kernel build soon also; no sound on my desktop, and, although I've identified the driver for my wireless card on the laptop, it won't install nicely as a module...
