I just got the torrent files for Doom 3 for Linux and Tsukuyomi Moon Phase (super cute romantic comedy anime) raw (no subtitles), and I've confirmed that both are good. Poor computer... it's gonna be so busy tonight. Gryn.

Of course, having Doom 3 doesn't do me any damn good without the DVD file with the levels on it...

Practicality....

Surely practicality suggests running Doom III on a Windows partition. Gaming might be all Windows is good for, but it is good for just that.

Except that Doom 3 won't run on my Windows partition. I only have 98, and Doom 3 requires XP. I've managed to get Freespace, Quake, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Descent and even Half Life running under Linux, so Doom 3 should be straightforward. I dislike helping to perpetuate the myth that Linux can't do games.

And he couldn't possibly play it on my cranked desktop with XP on it, could he. ;)

It can do games. But right now, it takes work to get it to happen well and the results can be rough. Performance and video driver quality seem to be the big problems.

Linux as a gaming platform could be a good "desktop acceptance vector" if all the problems are ironed out. Myst and Doom is why everyone bought Windows PCs in the early 1990s, after all.
