This morning, while driving to work, I turned on the radio. It was tuned to NPR, and the first sentence out of the speakers was "Power windows are known to have killed 37 children in the past ten years."

My first thought was "Wow, I knew it wasn't considered one of Rush's better albums, but I didn't think it was that bad."

37. Humph. And they think this is a major safety hazard that has to go, absolutely, no questions asked.

I'm with Terpstra on this one. If you protect something (to that extreme), you eventually destroy it.

But it's Friday, enough of the morbid stuff. Speaking of Rush, got Signals in last night, remastered... gotta listen sometime soon. Folks keep telling me I must hear "Countdown"...

Listen very carefully to the background sounds on this one.

*nods* Got it. Lucky men, Young and Crippen. Lucky to have made it back in one piece.

Neal Pert got it wrong, though. Apollo slowly leaves the ground, majestically, like an old-fasioned wet-navy ship leaving the ways... the Shuttle leaps off the pad as if you had jerked her drawers down and applied a hot poker to her fundament. Which is essentially what happens when you light nearly four million pounds of propellant under her.... there is no force on earth that will keep her on the pad once the SRB's are lit. And no way to bring her back until they burn out.

*sigh*

You know more about the launches that I do.
I had only noted it was a Columbia launch.

It was an educated guess based on the copyright date of the album, backed up by a quick googlesearch.

I'm a second-generation NASA contractor; my father tracked Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo thru 13 for RCA; I was sysadmin for Data Validation for the Upper Atmospheric Research Sattelite (Discovery mission STS-48)... to say I'm a space fan is... putting it mildly. (I've gotta get me a shot of SpaceShipOne and substitute it for this icon... :)

AH. Now I see why folks kept telling you to listen to that tune. :)

I still think Boston's "The Launch" is a better power tune, but the real NASA background makes this one... poignant...

Haven't heard it. I'll look for it.

Now I'm thinking of Deep Purple's "Space Truckin'". :)

I haven't heard that one. My second favorite "about the space shuttle" music is Trevor Rabin's Launch, which I imagine is a quite different from Boston's version. My favorite is still the Rush tune.

Bah. It's our local NPR's begging season, so .. out come the CDs! Yeah, it's kinda lame, and they need the money, but I've got zero resources to spare for those cats right now. :(

Heh, Heh, 37.

I'm sorry, I must miss something. Your talking about "Rush" or "Tom RUSH". Can you fill me in alittle more, I like morbid stuff. What the exact title, Please.

Rush is a band, among its albums and songs are 2112, Roll the Bones, and Superconductor.

It is _not_ overly morbid -- the coincidence with children dying from power windows is morbid.

First of all, Thanks for the reply.

Rush - Which Song? Is it the whole album?

POWER WINDOWS
Released: October 1985

5:36 The Big Money
5:05 Grand Designs
5:05 Manhattan Project
6:09 Marathon
6:19 Territories
5:15 Middletown Dreams
5:10 Emotion Detector
5:54 Mystic Rhythms

My first impression when I read Elf's post was, he was mistaken on the first sensentce...Of the broadcast.

Power Windows = Car Power Windows ( UnderStand what I'm trying to point out here.) and he took as 'The Band'. My impression on this topic was he was trying to annouce himself as air head and make joke out of it.

Morbidness on The Song (still is direct question) if there is any thing toward that song...that is being accused.

Music or any written form can't kill kids, unless the kid or adult is already sucidal and suffering from depression or any form of mental problems. To my opinion I highly dought it, that the song or any context is in fault.

Now Power Window of a Vehicale, I find that hard to believe unless the parents or Parent is murdering their own. Or the child was left unattended it has to be very young child.

Death of child isn't morbid - it's FU Bar. (Fuck up beyond any Recongintion.)

Morbid – in my dictionary that I created my self:

Is the poetry of Darkness, ones who express them self with out fear of views from others. The honest soul that can embrace the darkness and can learn from their inner soul and the dark shadow with in them selves, One who has morbid tendencies can learn to use that darkness to help them conquer the madness with in through Poetry or any written form.

Thanks for Reading

Automatic electric car windows (aka power windows) can kill like this:
Child left in car for a few mins with the window open.
Child sticks head out of window, and accidentally hits the up button.
Window closes and strangles child.

In the UK automatic windows in new cars only work downwards in auto mode. You have to keep the button pressed to close.

It's nowhere near a big a deal as many other dangers, but it is an entirely avoidable one at very little cost.
